Sold-out crowd enjoys Extreme Trifecta, high scores

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas – Cody Ford enjoyed his spin on Tokyo Drift on Saturday night during the second performance of the Lone Star Dodge Colby Yates Challenge presented by Priefert Ranch Equipment and Choctaw Casino.

The Hopkins County Regional Civic Center’s sold-out crowd witnessed all the excitement.

The Hermiston, Ore., bull rider matched moves with the B-C/ Barnett & Carnes bull for 90 points in the first round to have the highest-marked ride of the night and third-highest score of the two-night competition. That propelled Ford to third in the round behind Brian Herman and Kolt Donaldson, who rode for 91 and 90.5 points, respectively, on Friday night.

But the big winner for the weekend came from Friday’s performance. Rob Bell of Houston, British Columbia, was one of just two bull riders to have two qualified rides through both nights of competition. His 170-point total bettered Bronson Butcher of Muskogee, Okla., by 2.5 points and earned the Canadian $6,419 in American money.

“You have no idea how good this feels,” Bell said. “I don’t think I’d won a check since June. I’ve been going, and I’ve drawn good bulls, but I haven’t done my end. I have no excuses, but this feels so good.”

In fact, Bell said, the career cowboy had to scramble to make sure bills were paid and ends were met.

“I actually had to go out and get a job for the first time since I turned pro,” he said.

The reigning world champions found themselves in the winner’s circle of the Professional Bullfighters’ Daisy Protection Bullfight Tour competition. Wacey Munsell of Ulysses, Kan., and Sam Gress of Hutchinson, Kan. – representing Team Wolf Pipe – finished the weekend just four points ahead of second place in the highly contested match.

The Kansas tandem scored 175 points on Friday and 167 on Saturday for a 341 total. Team Alliance Bank – Ross Hill of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Lance McIlvain of Arlington, Texas – finished second with 337 points.

In the American Bucking Bull Inc. classic, D&H Cattle Co./Shawn Runyon shared the pride when their bull, Jacob’s Pet, skimmed past a talented field of 3- and 4-year-old bucking beasts to win the event. Jacob’s Pet was scored a 91.75 on Friday night, just half a point better than Apollo of Jones Rodeo Genetics.

Then the two bulls joined Mendell/Lane/Downard’s Chester with 90.75 on Saturday night.
