STEPHENVILLE, Texas (September 21, 2010) - “It has been an interesting past couple of weeks,” said Ty Murray in his weekly podcast.
Understated but accurate. Vintage Murray.
In the last two weeks, for the first time in PBR history, a rider challenged another rider’s score, four judges were suspended for the remainder of the season, and just last weekend, in Springfield, Mo., seven of the Top 10 riders in the world finished the event in a different position than when it started.
“There’s all this ancillary stuff that the fans and you and I are talking about,” Murray said.
“But the thing you have to remember are those top guys – those four, five or six guys – that are going for a World Championship. They still see the importance of the extra points that they can get. I would think that’s where the focus is, and if it’s not, that’s definitely where it should be.”
After a couple of rough outings in the first two Built Ford Tough Series events after the summer break, Austin Meier has ridden his way back to the top of the standings.
For months it looked like 2010 was going to be a disappointing year for J.B. Mauney, but he has used the past five events to ride his way into second place. Renato Nunes, meanwhile, has gone from first to third in the past two events.
“Guys are going to go through bad periods,” said Murray, whose entire interview can be heard here.
“Austin will look unstoppable, Renato will look unstoppable, and then J.B. will look unstoppable, and then they’ll take turns looking like they can’t ride in a wagon with the flaps down. You’re going to go through that as an athlete.”
“There are a whole lot of elements that play a part in winning a world title,” said Murray. World Champions “get it figured out and get those things turned around.”
