ADA, Okla, (May 27, 2010) - For 12 weeks Cord McCoy and his brother Jet raced around the world as one of 11 teams competing on the 16th season of “The Amazing Race.”
They did interviews with every major media outlet from People magazine to CBS’ “The Early Show.” And recently Sarah Jessica Parker was quoted in an interview at the online blog The Dish Rag as saying the McCoys were “probably the greatest team that ever competed … because of how they conducted themselves in every country they traveled around.”
This weekend, the popular redhead turns his attention to his signature PBR Touring Pro event, the Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Cord McCoy Invitational presented by Ariat and Cooper Tires, taking place this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex.
Prior to the event, the “Oh My Gravy, It’s a Pink-Tie Affair” dinner to raise money for Pontotoc Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Agri-Plex.
“I think there are going to be people coming from a lot further away to meet me and hang out with Jet McCoy,” Cord said. “We got an opportunity to use the spotlight to do some good things and raise money for Relay for Life.”
He said that it was an easy decision to lend his name to a community event that raises money for the cause.
His father Denny battled cancer, and the mother of his fiancée Sara Best passed away from cancer. Cord said that Sara was only nine years old when she lost her mother.
“For most of us, you don’t have to look very far to see how cancer has affected your family,” McCoy said. “It hits pretty close to home, so we thought it would be appropriate and the right thing to do.”
McCoy lent his name to the event a year ago, but because of the recent notoriety associated with the “Amazing Race,” they are expecting a sellout crowd of both PBR and television fans.
“People from Wisconsin to Texas to everywhere have started talking about it and wanting to come down,” said McCoy. “I think the whole town of Ada is pretty excited about the event too.”
McCoy said that he’s determined to make the event bearing his name a success for the riders and fans as well as the charitable organization it benefits.
“When you put your name on anything, it’s like putting your name on the top of a paper,” he said. “It’s yours, and whether it passes or fails, it’s yours. I definitely wanted it to be the best event it can be.”
He’s as happy to be associated with Relay for Life and they are with him and his brother. “We always wanted to do something good for the community,” he said. “We called them and said, ‘Hey, we want to help you guys out,’ and they jumped in with both feet.”
