One of our most favorite NIRA alumni Jack Kingsbery of Crystal City, Texas, will be honored at the Texas All-Aggie Reunion Rodeo on Oct. 17. The annual rodeo will be dedicated to Jack, Class of 1945, and he will be recognized during the rodeo with a buckle presentation. The article in the Aggie Rodeo Newsletter says, “Jack has been a tireless supporter and contributor to the Texas A&M Rodeo Team for many years.” Thanks to Charlie Rankin for keeping me informed. If you need more information, please contact Charlie.

National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration:

Stran and Jennifer Smith will receive the Rodeo Award at the 2009 American Cowboy Culture Awards Program. You all know Stran and Jennifer from watching her interview contestants at the NFR and Stran for winning the 2008 world championship in tie-down roping.

Gail Woerner will receive the Western Writing Award. She has written four books on the history of rodeo and numerous articles.

I have the privilege of being the Moderator for a panel, “The Power of Cowgirl Influence in a Cowboy World” with panelists: Gail Woerner, Rhonda Sedgwick Stearns, and Betty Sims Solt. The panel will be at 1 pm Saturday, Sept. 12.

I will also be on a panel about rodeo with “Bud” Townsend as moderator. Other panelists will be Tuffy Cooper, Alvin G. Davis, Bob Hinkle, and Phil Livingston. This panel will be at 2 pm, Friday, Sept. 11.

Thanks go out to Alvin G. Davis, who is the president and manager of the NCS & C, for his constant efforts in keeping rodeo as a major part of the National Cowboy Symposium.

If you can, attend the Symposium in Lubbock, Texas, starting Friday, Sept. 11-13. It is a great event.
