From Snaffle to Curb

Q: I am currently schooling and riding in a D-ring snaffle bit. I want to start training for Western Pleasure. What kind of shank bit do you recommend for the transition? -Kim

A: In most rule books, horses six years old and up are required to show western in a curb bit. Horses five and under can be ridden two-handed in a snaffle. As the horse advances in his training and you are doing more advanced stuff, your horse will probably work better in the curb, provided you find the right bit for him. First, it's important to understand the difference between curbs and snaffles; many people have misconceptions about this. May Notes from Julie
Greetings!

I've been a busy camper this past month and have plenty of action coming in the next two months to keep me out of trouble. Last weekend I was in Nashville and witnessed firsthand the devastating floods-my heart goes out to all of those who are recovering from the extreme loss.

This month is all about clinics for me, with clinics in KS and OH and a one-day demo in MD sponsored by my friends at Nutramax. Of course there is always room for spectators! Click here for tickets or get them at the door!

In June, I'll be in Sacramento for the Western States Horse Expo and I'll stay for a TV shoot (you can still apply to be in the cast here) and a CA clinic! I also have clinics in OH and CO. Here's the link to my full schedule.

With Mother's Day last weekend, I was reminded how lucky I am to have an incredible mother and how supportive she has been to me throughout my life. She has given me great strength and confidence and encouraged me to always question and be open-minded and most of all to "follow my bliss." I am also reminded how lucky I am to have a wonderful son who has been able to face incredible challenges and survive and thrive in spite of all odds. I celebrated Mother's Day doing what I do best-standing in the middle of an arena teaching riders and horses. I hope your day was just as special.

Enjoy the ride! -Julie
