COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Trick or Treat, the legendary Western Rodeos bull whose bloodlines trace back to the ProRodeo Hall of Famer Oscar, was euthanized Jan. 23 at the age of 17.
“It was because of his age,” said Linda Russell who, with husband Dan M. Russell operates the family’s breeding program on their ranch near Henryetta, Okla. “He couldn’t take the weather anymore, and we just couldn’t stand to let him go on like that. They used to say he was the most electric bull they had ever seen.”
The Russells bought the bull from famed bull breeder Alex Naccarato in 1994. The next year, Trick or Treat made the first of his six visits to the National Finals Rodeo and was second in voting to Bodacious for PRCA Bull of the Year.
Trick or Treat remained an elite bull for years and narrowly missed being named PRCA Bull of the Year in 1996 after finishing third and came in second again in 1997.
“All the greats have been on him, like Tuff (Hedeman), Ty (Murray) and Jim (Sharp),” Linda Russell said. “He was a fabulous bull for us over the years, and we have lots of babies from him. That way, he won’t go unremembered.”
The bull once made history at the Benny Binion Bucking Horse and Bull Sale at the Wrangler NFR by becoming the first animal to command $30,000.
