With the growing popularity of the sport of professional bull riding it is no surprise that the value of the bull athletes has also grown. Pedigrees in the bucking bull industry have become as important as those of the equine industry. This point was emphasized on March 29th when 194 lots all from the breeding program of the Frontier Rodeo Company grossed $498,275.
The sale which was held at the Farmers and Ranch Livestock Commission Co. in Salina, Kansas used two of the today’s modern technologies. First the sale was broadcast over the Internet at www.dvauction.com expanding the bidding pool. Second, each bull sold was featured in a video highlighting his bucking ability giving the buyers a first hand look at his potential. Among the buyers were well-known stock contractors and bull breeders Tom Teague and Terry Williams along with rodeo world champion Cody Ohl.
The top selling bull was a half interest in JC513, a three year old son of Watermelon Crawl out of a Rampage daughter, for $39,000. The top selling semen was that of Sky King which sold for $4500 per straw. To put perspective on the value of these animals the top 5 lots averaged $35,600; the top 10 lots averaged $23,440; and the top 20 lots averaged $15,260.
Frontier Rodeo Company is owned and operated by Jerry Nelson and Jimmy Crowther and has its headquarters in Hampshire, Texas. Frontier Rodeo’s bull roster includes such bulls as Big Bucks, Scene of the Crash, Clayton’s Pet and Nervous Waters to name just a few.
