SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALRIGHT AT THE CANADIAN FINALS

There was no shortage of action today in Edmonton, Alta. as rounds four and five of the Canadian Finals Rodeo were completed in front of capacity crowds.
Today was barrel racer Lisa Lockhart’s birthday and she figured out quite the way to celebrate it.
She won the matinee performance with a speedy 15.39-second run.
“That is the best birthday present I have ever had in my entire life,” she exclaimed. “I am 41 years happy today!”
So just a few hours later in front of the Saturday night crowd she did it again. This time she stopped the clock at 15.33.
So did that make the day any better?
“I just doubled it and it’s absolutely surreal. I just can’t even hardly imagine it!”
The Nebraskan barrel racer has won three of the five rounds and has the three fastest times of the week so far.
Other highlights during the day were:
In rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc riding, Dustin Thompson (Brooks, Alta.) took advantage of his option for a re-ride and rode Calgary Stampede’s Lynx Mountain for the highest-scored bronc ride of the week at 86.5 points.
In the evening performance, 2003 Canadian champion bronc rider Dustin Flundra (Pincher Creek, Alta.) kept his dreams of another gold buckle alive. He rode Kesler Rodeo’s Country Cat for 81.5 points.
Ross Kreutzer (Maple Creek, Sask.) stays in the overall lead with 105 points.
Davey Shields Jr. (Bashaw, Alta.) won the afternoon round in the bareback riding with an 83.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Lieutenant Whitney, and the evening performance’s go-round buckle went to Reid Rowan (Seven Persons, Alta.) who was 85.5 points on Peters and Sons’ Take The Plunge.
Cimmaron Gerke remains atop the bareback leaderboard with 90 points to his credit.
Bull rider Luke Ellingson (Weyburn, Sask.) danced his way to the top of the bull riding contest.
Ellingson won the afternoon round on Peters and Sons’ Squirt and was second in the evening on Kesler Rodeo’s Liberty Bell. He had scores of 87.5 and 85 and has 105 championship points to the 100 points Tanner Girletz (Cereal, Alta.) has.
In the tie-down roping race, three-time Canadian champion Steve Lloyd (Alix, Alta.) is well on his way to an amazing fourth title in a row.
He jumped to the top of the pile today and has 95 championship points.
In the steer wrestling the speedy times continued. Tanner Milan (Cochrane, Alta.) and Beau Franzen (Billings, Mont.) won the afternoon and evening performances, respectively. Milan turned his steer in 3.7 seconds and Franzen was 3.3.
They are currently tied for first place with 95 points apiece.
It was a tough day for the team ropers. With 12 teams taking two shots each during the two performances, only ten of the 24 runs ended with qualified times without any penalties.
The brothers from Camrose, Alta., Justin and Brett McCarroll, are still in the lead, now with 120 points. In second place are Mike Beers (Post, Ore.) and Jim Randle (Okotoks, Alta.) with 105.
The novice saddle bronc title went to Cordel Griffith (Cessford, Alta.). Griffith won two rounds and a total of $3,200.
Luke Creasy (Brownfield, Alta.) was named the Canadian champion novice bareback rider after winning all five go-rounds and $6,000.
