As the 33rd annual Canadian Finals Rodeo crossed the halfway mark this evening in Edmonton, the action heated up as the race to be named 2006 Canadian champion continues.
Kyle Thomson (Black Diamond, Alta.), the 2002 Canadian all-around champion, finally cracked out in the steer wrestling this evening. Coming into the performance, he knew he had a good chance at some money as he’d drawn the same steer that Travis Frank (Stony Plain, Alta.) had set a new arena record on just two nights ago.
Thomson turned the steer in 3.3 seconds, winning the round and $9,048.
“He was a nice little steer,” grinned Thomson. “Just what you wanted.”
While he’s currently fourth in the overall points race, he’s still in the running for the aggregate bonus, which can often make the difference when determining who will become the champion.
This is Thomson’s fifth CFR appearance, but is the first time he’s appeared as a bulldogger. To date, he’s always competed as a saddle bronc rider.
“I was pretty jittery the first couple of nights,” said Thomson, “but it’s going good now, I’m starting to settle down.”
It was also the first time he’s won a CFR go-round buckle.
In the saddle bronc riding, 2006 Canadian Rodeo Tour champion Lance Mulvahill (Dawson Creek, B.C.) rode Kesler’s outstanding 1,400 lb. brown mare Cool Alley for 85 points and first place in the go-round.
Cool Alley was selected as the horse of the year in Canada for the third year in a row in 2006.
Brighton, Colorado’s Cimmaron Gerke won the third round and moved into the overall lead in the bareback event.
He rode Calgary Stampede’s 1,100-lb. bay mare French Wake for 86 points.
Tanner Girletz teamed up with Vold Rodeo’s brindle outlaw Walk The Line for 89.5 points and a shiny new go-round buckle.
Girletz is tied for the overall lead with Blade Young (Tyvan, Sask.). They have 60 points apiece.
Cliff Williamson (Madden, Alta.), who’s making his 27th consecutive CFR appearance, won the tie-down event. Williamson wrapped things up with a speedy 7.4-second run, only 2/10ths of a second off the arena record.
Steve Lloyd (Alix, Alta.) and Chad Johnson (Del Bonita, Alta.) are tied with 60 championship points.
Rachelle Boyes (Souris, Man.) was the fastest barrel racer with a 15.58-second effort.
Lisa Lockhart (Chadron, Neb.) still sits in the No. 1 spot with 70 points to her name.
In the team roping event, there was another change on the leaderboard.
The team of brothers from Camrose, Alta., Justin and Brett McCarroll, roped things up in 5.1 seconds, good enough for second place on the night and 30 championship points. They now lead Mike Beers (Post, Ore.) and Jim Randle (Okotoks, Alta.) by 5 points, 85 to 80.
Randle and Beers matched their 4.7-second time from the first round, winning their second round in three days.
Also this evening, former Airdrie Rodeo Princess, Tara Sergerie, was named Miss Rodeo Canada 2007.
A new attendance record was set for the Friday night performance, with 16,676 fans packing Rexall Place.
