Earlier this year the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association made some changes to the qualifications process for the Canadian Finals Rodeo that opened the doors to non-Canadians. Because of those changes, guys like Montanan Jess Martin were able to make the Finals cut this year.
Martin, a saddle bronc rider who lives in Dillon, was matched up against Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Bonus Alley. They worked out an 80.5 score, winning the second go-round.
Martin who finished just out of the money on the first night was thrilled with the second night’s outcome and really, just happy to be in Edmonton.
“It’s good coming here and starting off the week like this and to have a win here in the second round,” he exclaimed. “I’m real tickled. Hopefully the rest of the week goes good.”
While not wanting to jinx himself, he admitted that winning a Canadian championship would mean a lot him even though he’s an American cowboy.
“It would be awesome for me,” said the 36-year-old who has rodeos extensively in Canada over the years. “But I’m not even looking that far down the week yet. To finally get the opportunity to come to the Finals, this is real special for me.”
Martin sits in the No. 2 spot on the saddle bronc leader board with 40 points, behind Ross Kreutzer (Maple Creek, Sask.) who has 65 points.
Other winners on the second night were:
Bareback rider Dusty LaValley (Crooked Creek, Alta.), who rode Calgary Stampede’s Knife Money for 83 points. LaValley took the lead in the overall standings with 60 championship points.
Tyvan, Sask.’s Blade Young won the bull riding with an 85-point ride on Northcott Rodeo’s Strickly Business and leads the standings with 60 points.
Steer wrestler Todd Woodward (Magrath, Alta.) split first place with the bulldogging Cassidy brothers, Cody and Curtis (Donalda, Alta.). All three turned in 4.1-second times and earned $6,786 apiece. Woodward moved to the top of the steer wrestling race with 60 points to date.
Raylee Edwards (Lethbridge, Alta.), the 2003 Canadian champion barrel racer, ran a 15.46-second pattern to win the second go-round. She moves into second place with 40 points behind Lisa Lockhart (Chadron, Neb.) who has 70.
Reigning Canadian champion team ropers Travis Gallais (Olds, Alta.) and Rocky Dallyn (Nanton, Alta.) took the lead in their event. They split first place in the second go-round with another set of brothers, Justin and Brett McCarroll (Camrose, Alta.). Both teams clocked in at five seconds flat. Gallais and Dallyn now have 65 championship points.
The evening also marked the first annual Tough Enough To Wear Pink night in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation of Canada. The evening featured all of the 99 CFR contestants, the rodeo personnel and many fans wearing pink shirts.
