Edmonton, AB – It was all about the timed event end of the arena during the second performance of the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) at Rexall Place. The CFR saluted the cowboys and cowgirls of tie-dwon roping, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing and team roping with an opening ceremony that saw those contestants fringed with fireworks in the centre of the infield, as six limos drove them around the arena to the cheers of the 12,873 rodeo fans in attendance.
Later in the evening, tie-down roper Steve Lloyd of Alix, Alta., and his horse Dutch, showed off some maneuveurs of their own when they won the tie-down roping go-round buckle in a swift 7.7 seconds, 3/10ths of a second faster than second place roper Marty Becker.
“I love this place,” Lloyd beamed shortly after the win.
Lloyd was the season leader in the tie-down roping heading into yesterday's opening performance, and in that first round split 10th with a time of 10.2, and no cheque for the effort. This run gets the 2003 Canadian tie-down roping champion back in the game.
“It's just keeps a guy up to pace with everyone else, and tomorrow's a new day and we get a new pen of calves,” he smiles, ready to take things one round at a time.
Bareback rider Luke Creasy is another cowboy at CFR taking things in stride, and even though he didn't ride out of the arena in one of them fancy limos, he did have one heck of a ride on Big Country Rodeo's Whiskey Bent, a strong brown gelding making his third trip to CFR.
It was also the Brownfield, Alta. cowboy's third trip to CFR, but his first in the open, making his 84.5 ride for first place and the go-round buckle that much sweeter.
“I was just going to grab my rigging and go back to the locker room because I figured, being the third guy out, there was no way it would hold up, but they started hollering at me to get up there so I could be near the victory lap in case I won, and I did and I was surprised. It still hasn't hit me yet.”
The third performance kicks off at 7 p.m. Nov. 13.
