LEDUC AND STAVELY EVENTS PROFITABLE FOR SEVERAL CONTESTANTS
The city of Leduc and the town of Stavely, Alta. hosted two of the 56 stops on the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s regular season schedule this past weekend.
When all was said and done, 17 cowboys and cowgirls managed to make money at both events, advancing their personal quests to qualify for the 34th annual Canadian Finals Rodeo, to be held in Edmonton, Alta. this November.
The big money winner at the two rodeos, held May 4-6, was steer wrestler Greg Hoar (Innisfail, Alta.). Hoar, who finished 17th in the Canadian standings in 2006, made $3,444.
Hoar won the Stavely Indoor Rodeo outright, twisting his steer in 3.7 seconds, earning $1,946. In Leduc, his 4.1-second effort was worth another $1,498 and third place.
It boosted the 30-year-old cowboy up 17 holes in the Canadian standings from 23rd to sixth, with a total of $4,861 in his bank account.
Other big weekend winners included: Marty Becker (Edmonton, Alta.) who made $791 tie-down roping and another $2,134 team roping for a total of $2,926. Becker’s team roping partner, Shane Schwenke (Harlem, Mont.) also made $2,134; Davey Shields Jr. (Bashaw, Alta.) had a $2,432 weekend and now sits second in the Canadian bareback standings; barrel racer Stacie Chisolm (Didsbury, Alta.) made $2,274; Jeremy Harden (Big Valley, Alta.), the 2005 Canadian all-around champion, cashed in twice for $2,236, winning the saddle bronc riding in Leduc and splitting fifth place in the steer wrestling in Stavely.

STAVELY RODEO CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF PRO RODEO
The Stavely Indoor Rodeo celebrated their 50th anniversary this year and were presented with a commemorative certificate from the CPRA’s interim general manager and rodeo administrator, Jim Pippolo during the Saturday night performance.

ROCKY ROCKABAR PASSES AWAY AT AGE 73
Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee Rocky Rockabar passed away this week in Medicine Hat, Alta.
Rockabar came from the Great Sand Hills of Saskatchewan, where his parents and grandparents settled in the early 1900s. Rocky moved to Alberta in 1948 and worked as a ranch hand at several ranches in the Medicine Hat area.
He competed mostly in the United States amateur circuit until 1958, before joining the professional ranks in 1959, participating in saddle bronc, bull riding and steer wrestling.
Rockabar qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in the bull riding in 1962, the same year he won his first of three Canadian high point championships, an honour he earned again in 1964 and 1966. He was crowned the Canadian champion saddle bronc rider in 1964.
While the Canadian bull riding championship eluded him, he finished second place four times, in 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1971.
As a successful rodeo cowboy, he chose to pass on his knowledge by instructing several bull riding schools. Rockabar also served on the board of directors of the Canadian Rodeo Cowboys’ Association from 1965 to 1971.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
A funeral is set for Monday, 1:00 pm, at the Saamis Chapel in Medicine Hat and will be followed by a public memorial service at the Seven Persons community hall at 3:00 pm
Rockabar is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary, daughter Billijo and sons Wade, Kevin and Guy.
