WOODWARD DOMINATES BULLDOGGING FIELD
Todd Woodward has taken control of the Canadian steer wrestling standings.
Woodward, who calls Magrath, Alta. home, earned an incredible $7,477 last weekend at three Canadian Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned rodeos, held in Wainwright, High River and Sundre, Alta.
Woodward won the bulldogging at High River’s Guy Weadick Memorial rodeo after a swift 4.9-second run, worth $2,411 as well as finishing second at the Sundre Pro Rodeo after a 3.5-second run, worth another $1,982.
His third windfall from the weekend came at the Wainwright Stampede, one of the 11 stops on the high-profile Canadian Rodeo Tour.
The points-based Tour, which features 11 of the highest-paying rodeos in Canada, pre-qualifies two contestants in each of the six major rodeo events for the $1.128 million dollar Canadian Finals Rodeo, held in Edmonton each November.
In Wainwright, the fifth stop on the 2007 Tour, Woodward was shut out in the first go-round, but won the second go outright in 3.5 seconds, worth $2,288.
His combined time of 11.8 seconds on two head was enough to catch sixth place in the aggregate payout, worth another $796.
Woodward, who squeaked into the Canadian Finals last year after winning $1,739 at the season-ending Saskatoon Stampede, has demonstrated that he will not be doing the same this time around.
He’s earned $22,912 to date, more than 2006 season leader Alex Cripps made all last year, virtually guaranteeing his spot in Edmonton.
The closest cowboy to Woodward in the standings is Brock Butterfield (Ponoka, Alta.) who has $11,941 in his account.
And, there’s still a pile of money to be made as Woodward and his fellow cowboys and cowgirls head into the fertile July 1st long weekend, which is also known as Cowboy Christmas.
