THOMPSON 'FEARLESS' IN CALGARY

The 2007 rodeo season kicked into high gear last weekend with stops in Calgary and Medicine Hat, Alta.
Calgary Stampede’s spring indoor rodeo, Rodeo Royal, which was held April 19-22, was the first stop on the high-profile 2007 Canadian Rodeo Tour.
The points-based Tour, which features 11 of the biggest rodeos in Canada, pre-qualifies two contestants for the $1.128 million dollar Canadian Finals Rodeo, held each Edmonton in November.
Not one to rest on their laurels, the always forward-thinking Stampede rodeo committee raised their prize money this time around to $25,000 per event, $5,000 more in each of the six major events than in 2006.
Dustin Thompson (Brooks, Alta.), the 2005 Canadian reserve saddle bronc champion, tapped out a spiffy 85.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s equine superstar, Fearless Warrior. Thompson and the 1,100-lb. bay mare won their event, earning Thompson $8,415 and top spot in the Canadian standings.
But, the 25-year-old cowboy shouldn’t have even been there, by some accounts. Immediately after last year’s Finals, Thompson underwent knee surgery to repair a torn ACL.
Originally, Thompson had hoped to be back in time for the May long-weekend rodeos, but after a long winter of intense physiotherapy, he felt good enough to enter his first rodeo in Logandale, Nev. earlier this month.
Justin Volz (Marwayne, Alta.), the 2002 Canadian champion bull rider, also made a comeback of sorts, winning his event during the final performance.
Volz rode Big Stone Rodeo’s black muley Sugar Bear for 87 points and $9,367, landing him on top of the Canadian standings.
In March of 2006 Volz had radical surgery to remove his left groin muscle after tearing it in half at the 2005 Ponoka Stampede.
While he returned to action late last season, this was the first huge win for the two-time Calgary Stampede $50,000 winner since his return.
Other winners in Calgary were: bareback rider Russ Hallaby (Hanna, Alta.), who has been on a tear since his first Canadian Finals appearance in 2006. Hallaby earned $6,518 south of the border this year during the winter rodeos and is 29th in the world standings.
The $7,427 he made in Calgary, combined with the $1,152 he made for second place in Medicine Hat, puts him into the No. 1 hole in the early Canadian bareback standings.
At the timed event end of things, Matt Shiozawa (Chubbuck, Idaho) won the tie-down roping with his 7.0-second run, four ticks faster than Scandia, Alta.’s Alwin Bouchard. They made $6,537 and $5,849, respectively.
Second-year pro Brock Butterfield (Ponoka, Alta.) won the steer wrestling event, earning $7,409, more than he made in all of 2006. He also place fifth in Medicine Hat, taking home another $1,168.
Combined with the $1,502 he made at the Milan Steer Wrestling event held in Cochrane last fall, he leads the Canadian standings with $10,080 in his bank account.
Ladies barrel racer Traci Dawson (Erskine, Alta.), who missed the Finals last year by one spot, won her event, running the cloverleaf pattern in 13.43 seconds. Dawson earned $7,450 in Calgary and $757 in Medicine Hat, where she placed sixth.
Complete results from both events as well as updated Canadian and Canadian Rodeo Tour standings are included in this release.
