The 33rd annual Canadian Finals Rodeo came to a close this afternoon in Edmonton as a new batch of Canadian champions were crowned in front of a capacity crowd in Edmonton, Alta.
When it was all said and done every single event champion was a first-time winner.
Maple Creek, Sask. native Ross Kreutzer had what he agreed to be his best Finals appearance.
He made money in every round, winning the first and last rounds outright.
This afternoon’s win was onboard Kesler’s dark brown gelding, Cloverleaf.
He’ll cash the largest cheque of the week, worth $41,845.
Former novice bareback and last year’s aggregate champion Dusty LaValley captured his first Canadian title this afternoon.
“This is just fabulous,” he exclaimed. “I can’t even explain it. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I began rodeoing. I don’t even really believe that it’s come true yet.”
The 25-year-old who calls Crooked Creek, Alta. home won the final round with an 85.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s bay mare Fearless Warrior.
He made a total of $29,405 during the Finals.
Tanner Girletz (Cereal, Alta.), who took a week off from school in Texas to fly home for the event, rode five out of his six bulls this week en route to a $41,468 payday.
“I came up here ready to ride and have fun, and that’s what we did all week,” said the 20-year-old Girletz.
American tie-down roper and 2006 season leader Tyson Durfey (Colbert, Wash.) only placed twice all week, but the 40 points he picked up for winning the aggregate (average) title was enough to push him into the overall lead.
He won $24,881 at the Finals.
Curtis Cassidy finally won a gold buckle that says Canadian champion steer wrestler on it. While he only turned 28 last month, the Donalda, Alta. cowboy had pretty much won every award and championship in Canada that he possibly could except that one.
He was quiet all week, bulldogging consistently and confidently, but when it was all over, he won both the aggregate and Canadian titles as well as his fourth high-point buckle.
His total on the week was $45,238, winning $27,143 in the steer wrestling and $18,095 in the tie-down event.
Justin and Brett McCarroll, a pair of brothers from Camrose, Alta. captured team roping titles despite not getting a qualified time in the final round.
They made a combined total of $33,929 in Edmonton.
Barrel racer Lisa Lockhart (Chadron, Neb.) captured the title in her event onboard her grey horse, Sterling. She made money in five of the six rounds, winning three of them.
She made $38,452.
Rod Warren captured his ninth Canadian all-around title. He also became the all-time CFR career money earner, passing Rod Hay. He also surpassed the legendary Kenny McLean, becoming the most-decorated cowboy in Canadian history with 14 major championships to his credit.
A total of 95,552 fans packed Rexall Place this week, a new total record.
