The CPRA’s 2007 rodeo season kicked off this past weekend with the Camrose Spring Classic Rodeo, held March 16-18.
Reigning Canadian champion team ropers Justin and Brett McCarroll, a pair of brothers who hail from Camrose, won their hometown rodeo.
The duo split first place honours in Camrose with Murdock Keith (Westlock, Alta.) and Mark Flynn, who’s also a Camrose native.
Each team roped things up in 5.6 seconds, winning $1,722.
Coincidentally, it marked the second year in a row that the reigning Canadian champion team ropers claimed victory at the first event of the following season.
The 2005 Canadian team roping champs, Travis Gallais (Olds, Alta.) and Rocky Dallyn (Nanton, Alta.), started the trend at the Medicine Hat Spring Rodeo, the first one in 2006.
Saddle bronc rider Justin Meston (Tees, Alta.) rode Vold Rodeo’s CFR and NFR-selected horse Raveen for 84 points, the No. 1 spot and $1,149.
Like the team roping, the bareback riding ended in a split. Reid Rowan (Seven Persons, Alta.) and Kevin Taylor (Swift Current, Sask.) tapped out matching 84.0-point rides on Vold Rodeo’s Blizzard and Fair Lady, respectively. Each rider won $921.
Mark Johansen (Big Valley, Alta.) won the bull riding on Vold’s Fever Pitch. They teamed up for 84 points and $964.
Back at the timed event end of the arena, Jimmy Gunsch (Thorsby, Alta.) won the tie-down roping in 8 seconds flat, worth $1,083, Justin Guenthner (Consort, Alta.), the 2004 Canadian champion steer wrestler had a speedy 3.4-second run, worth $1,350 and the win, and Maria Gee (Stanford, Mont.) won the barrel racing and $896 after her 14.21-second effort.
The next stop on the 2007 CPRA rodeo schedule is Lethbridge, Alta., April 13-15.
