Bull riders from around the nation made their way to Hughenden on the weekend to contest one of the richest bull rides in the west with over $10 000 in prize-money on offer.
A field consisting of some of the most accomplished bull riding athletes in the nation did battle with an All Star line up of extreme bucking bulls provided by Frank Biddle from Warwick, Lionel Simpson from Tully and Trevor Dunne from Duaringa.
The opening rounds of the competition were dominated by Townsville bull rider, Adam Wales when he made an exceptional ride aboard the electric little bull, Jigsaw to mark an event high score of 86.5 points.
Local favorite, Darren Brandenburg pleased the crowd when he qualified for the Ikin Storage Championship Round with an 83 point score aboard the Lionel Simpson owned, Yankee.
It took 81.5 points or better to make the Championship Round which featured bulls such as Stampede, 2005 Bucking Bull of Australia, Big Show, 2005 Superbull Bull of the Series, Hootchie Coochie, Saloon and a number of other great bulls.
The scene was set, 8 riders consisting of two former Australian Champions, two State Champions, the number one Rookie contender of the year and a rank outsider.
One by one the All Star Bulls dislodged the strong field of contenders with not one rider making the qualified time in the Championship Round, which has not been seen in the sport for some years now.
In this situation it goes back to the scores of the first round, giving the rank outsider, Adam Wales his first Tour Stop win ever and close to $4000 in prize-money for his efforts.
Event organizers were overwhelmed with the attendance, community support and are keen to lock the event in annually for the Hughenden region in the future.
The next event on tour is Capella which is held at their multipurpose Covered Arena. This is Capella State High School’s ninth year of hosting a bull riding event and it is always well attended and supported.
