83-Point Rides Take Center Stage at National Western

DENVER, Colo. - There were two 83-point efforts at the top of the leaderboard at the third performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Thursday.

In bareback riding, it was Josh Luger from Fort Yates, N.D., who was the most successful. He rode the Burns Rodeo Company horse named Gray Coat. While his 83 is in second place in the first round of competition, it puts him in position to get another good score tomorrow and qualify for the finals. Ryan Gray from Cheney, Wash., leads the first round with 86 points.

In saddle bronc riding, Canadian J.R. Berg took the lead in the first round with an 83-point effort on Dragon Dance from Cervi Championship Rodeo. Berg, a Canadian Finals Rodeo qualifier makes his home in Marwayne, Alberta.

Annesa Self from Valley View, Texas, was riding her great horse Dillon in the women’s barrel race here. They stopped the clock in 15.53 seconds and are leading the first round.

All of these contestants make their second appearance here on Friday at the matinee performance beginning at 2 p.m. The Friday evening performance at 7:30 will see new contestants competing in the first round.

Team Roping: 1, Jake Weddle, St. Joe, Ark., and Shawn Harris, Searcy, Ark., 4.3. 2, Daniel Braddock, Tioga, Texas, and Matt Scogin, Frierson, La., 6.5. 3, (tie) Shane Philipp, Washington, Texas, and Britt Bockius, Claremore, Okla.; and Travis Bounds, Clifton, Colo., and Ty Shepard, Canon City, Colo., 6.7.
