Fall Fest Bull Fest, a freestyle bullfighting competition sanctioned by the Midwest Bullfighters Association, was held Saturday, October 4th, at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Ulysses KS.
Twelve men competed in a format which had 3 men in each of 4 rounds. The winner of each round came back for the Championship round. After facing two fighting bulls it was Cody Calkins who won the event championship.
In recent years freestyle bullfighting has grown in popularity across the nation. Fans have always been intrigued by the role the bullfighter plays in protecting the bull riders. What many may not realize the talent these bullfighters must have to maneuver the bull away from the rider and yet not get injured themselves. A freestyle bullfight equals if not exceeds the excitement of a Spanish bullfight without injuring the bull. It is a “dance” between the bullfighter and the bull with bullfighter getting as close as he can to his “partner” without getting killed or injured. The dangers are real and the excitement is catching fans attention. A crowd estimated at 2000 came out for the event and all got what they paid for – a night of excitement!
Barrelman, “Starvin Marvin” not only added his own brand of humor and protection for the bullfighters, but spoke to the kids about the problem of bullies in school. An outstanding man, an outstanding addition to the event!
