CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Prior to Friday’s rodeo, the lead in the first round of bareback riding belonged to a contestant who had ridden at the first performance of the 113th Annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
Zach Curran, from Arvada, Colo., was in first place with an 84-point effort on Five Star Rodeo’s horse named Marbles. Then, Ryan Gray, from Cheney, Wash., tied with Curran during the third performance. That all changed during the seventh performance when Will Lowe, Royce Ford and Clayton Foltyn moved into the top spots.
Lowe, the 2003, 2005 and 2006 world champion from Canyon, Texas, is now at the top of the leader board all by himself with a 90-point ride on Vold Rodeo’s Little Linda. Right behind him is his traveling partner Royce Ford from Greeley who tied with Clayton Foltyn from El Campo, Texas. They each had 87 points to tie for second place. The first round of competition is now over and these men have all earned a little prize money from the “Daddy.” Lowe’s first place check was worth $5,760. Ford and Foltyn each won $3,840 and Curran and Gray held on for $1,472.
Ford and Lowe are part of a four-man traveling partnership that also includes Wes Stevenson from Kaufman, Texas, and Tom McFarland from Wickenburg, Ariz. McFarland was unable to compete here and his career may be changing as a horse flipped over on him in the bucking chute in June in Pecos, Texas. McFarland sustained 26 breaks to his arm and wrist. He had surgery and is recuperating with his wife and three daughters. Ford and others organized a fundraiser Friday night at Frontier Park for the McFarland family.
“It’s not the same without Tom with us,” Ford said. “Hopefully we can raise some money to help him support his family until he can ride again. It’s pretty cool for Will and I to have had the day we did today. We’re going to do all we can for Tom and his girls.”
Foltyn is looking promising to win the Cheyenne Frontier Days all-around title. Along with bareback riding, He also scored 90 points in bull riding to tie for first place in the first round. That was worth $5,436 and made him the first man to win checks in more than one event.
All of these men will compete in the second round on Saturday and be hoping for more high scores to qualify them for Sunday’s finals. None of them have ever won a Cheyenne Frontier Days championship so they will be pulling out all the stops in an effort to get the coveted buckle.
Saturday’s action gets underway at 11:45 a.m.
