A very effective program called BULLYING HURTS that educates teenagers, through a variety of organizations, to mentor grade school children against bullying, has hired former rodeo clown and bullfighter, George Doak as Director of Rodeo Relations and Education Communication. The veteran of twenty-eight years in the rodeo arena, baiting the bull and saving cowboys, will promote this positive service program throughout the rodeo world encouraging committees and individuals to introduce this worthwhile project in to their home communities.
Bullying by peers can adversely affect a child in many ways. School grades can drop, attitude can quickly change to one of negativity, fear can enter a youngster’s life for the first time. The positive connection between older youth mentoring younger children about bullying, in the BULLYING HURTS PROGRAM, has been successful in diminishing this serious problem in both age groups. Testimonials are coming in daily as to the results of this program: “The program has been an instant success within our school district,†reported Principal Jeff Ehlenz, of Ogilvie Public School, Ogilvie, Minnesota. “This has been a truly positive connection between a quality group of high school students and third and fourth grade students,†stated David Bartlett, Principal, Dildine Elementary School, Cheyenne, Wyoming. The program has been utilized by FFA, Student Councils, National Sheriff’s Association, and other groups. Charlie Daniels, hosted a ‘Bullying Hurts Radio Special’, which included many other country music entertainers and was heard over numerous country music radio stations.
Starvin’ Marvin Nash, a rodeo clown and bullfighter, originated the Program. His career began in the rodeo arena in 1978. The barrelman, has limited his rodeos to working Cowtown, New Jersey, during the summer. The majority of his time is committed to this Project. The addition of Doak will allow the Bullying Hurts Program to be represented at more western-type venues. Coming events will include the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in late October and at the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Convention and the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in early December.
