CHEYENNE, Wyo. ---July 28, 2010 --- It’s no surprise to Sherry Cervi fans to see her at the top of the leader board at any rodeo.

She is a talented horsewoman and exceptional barrel racer, proven by 13 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifications and two world championships. She may well be on the verge of her third gold buckle for being the best barrel racer in the world.

Cervi, from Marana, Ariz., rode her horse “A Man With Roses” that she calls George here to win the first round of competition. They stopped the clock in 17.62 seconds and earned over $5,000. She came back here at the fifth performance and bested her time by one full tenth of a second riding “Meter My Hay” or Stingray. The palomino mare has taken her to many wins including the championship at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December.

With her time of 17.52 seconds at the fifth performance, she has a total of 35.14 seconds and is one-tenth of a second ahead of Lindsay Sears. Cervi plans to ride Stingray again here at Sunday’s finals. She won this rodeo in 1995 and again was riding two horses. She started out on “Sir Double Delight”, Troubles and then rode “Jet Royal Speed”, Hawk in the finals.

The horses she rode here this year are actually related to the ones that took her to the title 15 years ago. George is a nephew of Troubles and Stingray is a niece of Hawk.

“It’s very rewarding to have my horses perform,” Cervi said. “They all run a little different and have different personalities, but the thing they have in common is they all have a lot of speed and heart, and that’s why I’ve been successful.”

Trevor Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, is on pace to qualify for the finals in all three of his signature events. Steer roping saw him with a 17.9-second run. That isn’t placing in the round but is a solid time. He will need to speed it up be among the top 12 on two runs and qualify for the finals. He and team roping partner Patrick Smith are tied for sixth place in team roping. And, in the single event that Brazile is the reigning world champion, tie-down roping, he had a 14.1 second run and again is tied for sixth place.

Brazile has earned seven world champion all-around titles and is gunning for his eighth. Any money he wins here will help him accomplish that goal. Brazile won the steer roping title here in 2000 and 2001. He won the all-around title as well in 2001, but hasn’t earned a Cheyenne Frontier Days buckle since then. Not only would he like to have another of the prestigious buckles that go with the championships, the money will count towards points and his quest for more world titles.
