Things are also falling into place for bull rider Souli Shanklin. The Rocksprings, Texas, cowboy finished first in the Ken Lance Memorial PRCA Rodeo, held May 21-22 just outside Ada, Okla.
Shanklin scored 88 points on D&H Cattle’s Ten Ring and collected $1,843 in the win.
“He was out there a couple of jumps, spun around to the right, and then he got it on right there,” said Shanklin, who turns 21 in August. “I stayed in the middle, and it all worked out.”
Shanklin’s win in Oklahoma came on the heels of his victory last week at the Santa Rosa Round-Up in Vernon, Texas. Shanklin, who is currently 20th place in the PRCA World Standings, hopes to jump into the Top 15 this summer.
Shanklin is studying agricultural leadership and will be a senior next fall at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
“I just got out of school, so I’m entered everywhere,” he said.
Ryan Jarrett (all-around and tie-down roping), Ryan Little (bareback riding), Blake Mindemann (steer wrestling), Jake Weddle and Shawn Harris (team roping), Lance Kelly (saddle bronc riding) and Kendra Dickson (barrel racing) were the other winners at the Ken Lance Memorial PRCA Rodeo.
The Oklahoma rodeo is named for the late legendary rodeo producer and has returned after a 15-year hiatus. Dan Megehee, the arena director, is running a kids’ rodeo camp this week in conjunction with the rodeo.
