Let the Ariat ProRodeo Playoffs begin: Caldwell Night Rodeo opens $1.62 million series

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A total of 24 world champions with a combined 64 world titles highlight the 284-contestant field for the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo, the first of four events of the $1.62 million Ariat Playoffs.

Competitors in the Caldwell Round of the Ariat Playoffs will compete for a share of the $322,000 purse when the five-day event starts Aug. 12 at the Caldwell Night Rodeo Arena. Highlights from the Caldwell Night Rodeo, which concludes Aug. 16, will be televised on Fox Sports Net, with three separate one-hour telecasts beginning the week of Sept. 1.

Action starts each night at 8 p.m. MT.
Reigning and five-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, heads the list, competing in tie-down roping and team roping in Caldwell. Brazile, the leader in the world’s all-around standings, is trying to match Tom Ferguson and Larry Mahan, who each won six world all-around titles, and would trail only Ty Murray’s mark of seven in the record books.

Brazile, also the defending tie-down roping world champion, is one of four cowboys who qualified in two events for the opening Ariat Playoff rodeo. Roughstock cowboy Steven Dent, of Mullen, Neb., who leads the bareback riding Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings and is fourth in the all-around race, will compete in both bareback riding and saddle bronc riding this week. Another roughstock cowboy, Jesse Bail, of Camp Crook, S.D., will ride broncs and bulls in Caldwell for the second year in a row, while timed-event cowboy B.J. Campbell, of Benton City, Wash., will compete in steer wrestling and team roping.

In addition to Brazile, five other reigning world champions will be in attendance in Caldwell this week – bareback rider Bobby Mote of Culver, Ore.; steer wrestler Jason Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo.; team roping header Chad Masters of Clarksville, Tenn.; team roping heeler Walt Woodard of Stephenville, Texas; and barrel racer Brittany Pozzi-Pharr of Victoria, Texas.

Taos Muncy, of Corona, N.M., the reigning world champion saddle bronc rider, recently returned to competition after suffering a broken leg in April. He qualified for Caldwell after finishing the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour season ranked No. 24 but did not enter the rodeo.

At the conclusion of the 26-city Wrangler ProRodeo Tour on Aug. 3 in Dodge City, Kan., the top 35 contestants (35 teams in team roping) in total Tour points and the “Wild Card,” each event champion from the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo advanced to Caldwell.

The top 22 contestants in each event based on total Wrangler ProRodeo Tour points from the cumulative Wrangler ProRodeo Tour regular season, each event’s Caldwell Night Rodeo finals champion and DNCFR Wild Card advance to the Puyallup (Wash.) Rodeo, the second Ariat Playoff event scheduled for Sept. 5-7.
