Jayne, Harter pick up checks all over Texas in long weekend
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It is possible, with a little bit of imagination, to see the four PRCA rodeos in Texas over the May 6-9 weekend as one giant rodeo with $181,354 in prize money and pretty much the same cast of characters.

Of course, the four arenas in this one big rodeo were 300 miles apart, west to east, and required a good deal more driving time than riding time, but still...

Bareback rider Evan Jayne made more out of this long weekend odyssey than anybody, winning two of the rodeos and earning checks in all four. He banked $2,409 to help his cause both in the Texas Circuit and in the PRCA World Standings, where he moved from 35th to 30th place.

At 268,601 square miles, Jayne’s adopted home of Texas is a bit larger than his native France (211,207), and over the last few years of residence in the Lone Star State, he has become accustomed to the wide open spaces and long road trips across its terrain.

“It is so much different here,” Jayne said. “In Europe, there is a city every 10 miles or so, and in Texas, it is three times that. When you tell me that the driving I did this weekend was like driving from Marseille (his hometown) to north of Toulouse … well, that sounds like a much longer trip.”

Jayne’s travels were further complicated by his day job. He is teaching French at Huntsville (Texas) High School and had classes to work both Wednesday and Thursday before hitting the road each afternoon for the rodeo grounds.

On May 5, Jayne had an 85-point ride on Beutler & Son’s Rustler to tie Tilden Hooper and Wes Stevenson for first place at the Jasper (Texas) Lions Benefit Rodeo, and he then tied for third place at the Crockett (Texas) Lions Club PRCA Rodeo on May 6.

The longest leg of his weekend road trip, to the Butterfield Stage Days in Bridgeport, came on May 7. Jayne earned a fourth place finish there and then, saving his best for last, won the Mineral Wells (Texas) Rodeo on May 8.

His 82-point ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Assault was three points better than Clint Cannon and Ryan Little, who tied for second place.

“In Austin (in March), I got hung up during a ride and injured my groin,” Jayne said. “I’ve been struggling to stay healthy ever since. I thought I might doctor release out of the rodeos this weekend, that if I kept competing hurt it could put a real dent in my summer schedule.

“But then I started looking at my draws for the weekend. I thought maybe I would give it a try. My leg didn’t feel bad, and the issues I’d been having with equipment sorted themselves out. It was like everything was falling together at once.

“I feel I am riding to the best of my ability right now after some setbacks. I got kicked in the face (by a horse), then broke my back at the Heartland ProRodeo Finals in 2008. Last year, I kind of started 4-5 months behind everybody else.”

Jayne’s plan had been to use this as a sort of rebuilding year and stick to competing mostly in regional rodeos. He may still do that, but his success on his ambitious cross-Texas tour against the likes of Will Lowe, Cannon and Stevenson has him thinking about going to some of the bigger rodeos this summer.

“Right now? I have no idea,” Jayne said. “I’ll wait two or three weeks, then decide.”
It could be argued that saddle bronc rider Bradley Harter had even a slightly better weekend than Jayne, placing first or second in all three of his appearances (he skipped Bridgeport).

Harter started May 6 with a win in what he considers his hometown rodeo in Mineral Wells – he lives midway between Weatherford and Mineral Wells, about 15 minutes from arena. His parents, Ted and Linda, wife Kirby and 7-month-old son Houston Ryder were all at the arena to see his winning 83-point ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Buck N Aye.

On Friday morning, he climbed into his camper-mounted Dodge truck with travel partner Sam Spreadborough and made the 3½-hour drive to Crockett. He won again, this time with an 82-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Copy Cat.

“If you get on one of Andrews’ really good horses, it’s kind of like cheating,” Harter said.
He spent the night in Crockett, and then made the 90-minute drive to Jasper, where he and Cody Martin tied for second with 83 points, one back of Spreadborough. The three-rodeo parlay paid Harter $2,834, moving him from 19th place to 15th in the world standings.

“I had a good run at Rodeo Austin,” Harter said, “but it’s been kind of slow since then. It feels good to put together a weekend like this. It always makes for a nice trip home when both of us (he and Spreadborough) do well.”

Trevor Brazile won the steer roping average in Bridgeport with a time of 36.1 seconds on three head to move from fourth to second place in the world standings and increase his lead in the all-around world standings.

Brazile has season all-around earnings of $110,274, to lead second-place Josh Peek by $63,206 as he bids to become the first eight-time all-around world champion in rodeo history.

Brazile also leads the tie-down roping standings by $5,207 over Stran Smith, and is seventh among team roping headers.

Franklin (Tenn.) rodeo to raise funds for flood victims
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – In an emergency meeting, the board of the Franklin Noon Rotary Club has voted to redirect funds that will be raised from the May 13-15 Franklin Rodeo to Williamson County flood victims.

“We understand the hardships that people have gone through with the floods, and we want to help,” said Gavin Moon, president-elect of the Rotary Club. “A significant portion of the rodeo’s proceeds will go to benefit flood victims in our county.”

Funds raised by the rodeo usually go to scholarships and Williamson County charities. Over the past 60 years, the Rotary Club has raised $2 million for charity through the rodeo.

The public may also donate at all Pinnacle Bank Locations in Franklin.
The rodeo will be held at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center. It is the largest rodeo in the state, with nearly 400 cowboys and cowgirls competing. For more information, visit www.FranklinRodeo.com.

Rodeo News and Notes
Hall of Fame bullfighter Doak undergoes heart surgery
George Doak, a member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame as a bullfighter, is scheduled for quadruple bypass surgery today in his home state of Texas.

Doak, who turns 73 on May 18, was taken to the hospital with blocked arteries, but doctors have told his wife Reada that there is no heart damage and the prognosis for a full recovery is good.

A bull rider and bareback rider in his youth, Doak started his professional bullfighting career in Woodstown Pilesgrove, N.J. He fought bulls at the National Finals Rodeo in 1971 and 1977 and for many years worked the National High School Finals Rodeo and the College National Finals Rodeo.

He worked in tandem with Junior Meek for many years, and they were inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., together in 2000.

Hall of Fame stock contractor Rosser released from hospital
ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Cotton Rosser was released from Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital May 5 after four days of treatment for injuries suffered in a horse-related accident while on the Rancheros Visitadores ride near Santa Ynez, Calif.

Rosser, 81, sustained four broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung and three vertebral transverse process fractures (cracked vertebrae) in the accident.

Daughter-in-law Bonnie Rosser reports that he is still in a lot of pain, but is making steady progress.

Founder of Smith Brothers rope store dies in Brazil
Johnny Terrance Smith, founder of the Smith Brothers roping supplies store in Denton, Texas, died April 6 in Goiania, Brazil, from a heart attack. He was 69.

In the 1980s, Smith Brothers Arena was host to some of the greatest team roping competitions in the country – the Bob Feist Invitational and the Smith Brothers World Champion Junior Calf Roping.

Smith moved to the ranching country of central Brazil in 1990, and lived there for the last 20 years of his life. He requested that he be cremated and his ashes scattered on the Araguaia River in Brazil.
