CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The sixth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo couldn’t have been any better for Wyoming bull rider Bobby Welsh.

With his family cheering him on, Welsh took the lead in the second round with an 89-point ride on Broken Arrow Rodeo’s China Grove. He also is second in the over-all standings with a total of 169 points on two rides. Welsh lists Cheyenne Frontier Days as his favorite rodeo. He scored 92-points here in 2004 and it is definitely one that he wants to win. His wife, Sunni and three kids, Madison, Colt and Hayden will all be making the trip back to Cheyenne from their home in Gillette to watch him compete in the finals on Sunday.

Leading the bull riding is Clint Craig from Mena, Ark., with 160 points. Craig won the championship here in 2006. He was 88 points here on Thursday, just one point behind Welsh and is second in the round. There is a new set of contestants starting on Friday that will try to move these guys down the ladder, but it would be nearly impossible to move them out of the finals.

Cheyenne’s final round of bull riding will feature the best 20 from all previous competition. So far, there are only 10 riders to have successful rides on two bulls, so it is very likely that some of the finalists will come from high-marked rides on one bull.

Billy Etbauer has competed at the “Daddy” for over 20 years, won five world championships and titles at nearly every major rodeo on the circuit. He put himself in position to get one of those buckles that has eluded him with an 85-point ride in saddle bronc riding Thursday. Etbauer, from Edmond, Okla., now leads the second round after his great ride on Kinney Rodeo Company’s Shawnee. He is tied with Heith DeMoss from Heflin, La., for first place in the over-all standings. They each have 162 points on two and will wait through the next two days to see if their position holds.

The final round of competition in bareback and saddle bronc riding will feature the men with the highest total scores after two rides. In steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping, the top 15 advance. The barrel racing will see the best 12 women from previous competition.

Thursday’s rodeo was part of the Tough Enough To Wear Pink Campaign to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. Barrelman and clown Cody Sosebee and Cheyenne Frontier Days Contestant’s committee chairman both had their heads shaved during the performance to help raise money. Over $6,000 was collected for the haircuts.

The seventh performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will begin at Frontier Park at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. A new set of contestants will be trying to qualify for the finals in every event except the barrel racing, which will feature the second round of competition.
