CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The steer wrestlers have invaded Cheyenne Frontier Days and neighbors from South Dakota are holding four of the top positions on the leader board.

At the top and looking over most of the competition is Jake Rinehart, from Highmore, S.D., who is easily one of the tallest competitors in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association at 6 foot 7 inches. He weighs in at 265 and used all of it to bring two steers to the ground in 13.8 seconds. That is nearly three seconds faster than the man in second place, Josh Peek, from Pueblo, Colo. Peek and Rinehart are tied for first place in the first round at 6.9 seconds. Rinehart had an identical time in the second round and Peek had a 9.8. Peek’s total is 16.7 seconds.

Rinehart qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2007 and was just out of the top 15 in 2009. He is fourth in the world standings and looking for a trip back to Las Vegas in December to compete at rodeo’s championship event. He is 19th in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour and would like to move up and be assured a qualification to the Justin Boots Playoffs in September. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo is a gold-tier event on the $1 million tour.

The next three contenders in the over-all standings are from South Dakota. Nick Guy from Rapid City has a total time of 17.1. Camp Crook’s Matt Gilbert has an 18.2 and Jason Ohm from Ree Heights, S.D., has an 18.9.

In sixth place is Kyle Whitaker from Chambers, Neb., who has a 19.1. Whitaker leads the second round with the fastest time of the rodeo here so far at 6.8. There are still 97 steer wrestlers to make an appearance here, so these leads could definitely be in jeopardy, but all of these men definitely have an opportunity to qualify for Sunday’s finals and take home a Cheyenne Frontier Days buckle.

The fifth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will begin at Frontier Park at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday. All of the PRCA events will be in their first round of competition. The women’s barrel racing is in the second round.
