CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Saddle bronc riders from the fifth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo moved into the top six positions in the first round thanks to some outstanding rides on great bucking horses.

Former world champion Chad Ferley from Oelrichs, S.D., and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Isaac Diaz from Stephenville, Texas, are now tied for the lead in saddle bronc riding. Diaz was aboard the Pro Rodeo Inc. horse named Bella Starra. Ferley rode Mossbrucker’s War Chick. When the judges tallied up their scores these men had identical markings of 86 points.

Shaun Stroh from Dickinson, N.D., is now in third place with 82. He is followed by Heith DeMoss, from Heflin, La., and Jeff Willert from Belvidere, S.D. who both had 81. Heith’s older brother moved into a tie for sixth place, Cody DeMoss, also from Heflin had an 80. All of these men have been to rodeo’s championship event, the NFR, which is held in Las Vegas every December to see who leaves with the coveted gold buckle that signifies that they are the best in their specialty. Willert won that title in 2005 and his traveling partner Ferley won it in 2006.

Diaz is currently 14th in the world standings and hoping to improve his position with success from Cheyenne. Ferley is 10th, Stroh is 23rd, Heith DeMoss is third and Cody DeMoss is in sixth. Of all of these men, Cody DeMoss is the only one to have won a Cheyenne Frontier Days championship.

In bareback riding, Clint Cannon, the world standings leader from Waller, Texas, had the high-marked ride. He scored 80 points on Pro Rodeo Inc.’s City Lights. While the 80 is not likely to get a big check from the first round, it does put him in contention for the title with a good score on Thursday. Cannon has won $139,959 so far this year. There is about six weeks left in the regular season and he needs just over $13,000 to set a record. Last year, Cimmaron Gerke, from Brighton, Colo., won the bareback riding and $13,672, so the potential for Cannon to set the record here is a definite possibility.

Eleven of the 30 bull riders were successful here on Wednesday. Among those was reigning world champion J.W. Harris from May, Texas, who is in a tie for fourth place in the first round with an 85-point effort. The high-marked ride of the day went to Chad Denton from Berry Creek, Calif., who had an 87 on Mossbrucker’s Jokers Wild. If the bull riders step up to the plate again tomorrow, the top 20 who qualify for Sunday’s finals will make it very exciting.

The sixth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will begin at Frontier Park at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. All of the competition will be featuring the second round.
