HOUSTON -The best bulls and cowboys faced off Sunday at RodeoHouston Xtreme Bulls, but there was only one champion at the end of 52 rides — 2007 World Champion PRCA Bull Rider, and 2007 and 2008 RodeoHouston Super Series Champion Bull Rider B.J. Schumacher.
“Before this week, I was low in the standings,” Schumacher said. “But now I’m getting back up there!”
After a long round 90 point ride put him in first place, 26-year-old Schumacher was the last to ride in the short round atop a bull called “Hot Diggity Damn.” Schumacher held on for 8 seconds and became the 2009 RodeoHouston Xtreme Bulls Champion, with a score of 92 points, leaving Houston with $24,446.
He rode that same bull to become the 2008 RodeoHouston Super Series Champion and according to announcer Boyd Polhamus, “He [Schumacher] has to like this bull in this building.”
After getting bucked off in the RodeoHouston BP Super Series Semifinal 2 earlier this week, Schumacher was given a chance to come back and try once more in the Wild Card Round for a title before he left Houston.
“My last rides [in the BP Super Series] weren’t good,” he said. “They were good bulls; I just messed them up, but maybe it’s a good thing I did because it really motivated me to do well today. I got my try back [in the Xtreme Bulls].”
The Hillsboro, Wis., native now has another buckle to add to his collection and another title to put on his résume; 2009 RodeoHouston Xtreme Bulls Champion.
