SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- The fourth and final bracket of regular rodeo competition started on Sunday night at the AT&T Center at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.

Tie-down roping was one of the most exciting events of the night and if what happened in the first round holds through three more, it’s going to get even better. Cody Ohl, from Hico, Texas, was the first roper out of the box and set the pace with an 8.1-second run. The five-time world champion tie-down roper competed like he was gunning for a sixth world title, stopping the clock in 8.1 seconds. Ohl’s run held through the next 11 ropers to win the round, but just barely.

Texans held all four top spots here with Adam Gray from Seymour, and Ryan Watkins from Dublin both stopping the clock in 8.2 seconds to tie for second. Gray and Watkins both qualified for their first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) in 2009. The fourth place position was just one-tenth of a second slower. Monty Lewis who won the world title in 2005 had an 8.3. Just out of the money was Clif Cooper from Decatur who had an 8.6.

Shaun Stroh who is second in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association saddle bronc riding standings split the win here on Sunday night with Rod Hay who is trying to qualify for his 21st WNFR. Storh from Dickinson, N.D., won the first rodeo he entered since the WNFR at Fort Worth, Texas one week ago. He had an 82 point effort here aboard Nitro Mountain from Calgary Stampede. Hay’s 82-point ride also came on a Calgary horse. The Wildwood, Alberta, resident rode the famed John Wayne. Each man earned $1,815 for their rides.

Joe Gunderson, from Agar, S.D., is also using momentum that he gained at Denver’s rodeo in January. He rode Calgary Stampede’s horse Licorice Baby in the bareback riding for 84 points to win $2,074.

All of these men will have their second appearance here Monday night at 7 p.m.
