Ferley extends hot streak at Red Bluff on Kool Toddy
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For 2006 World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Chad Ferley, his trip to the April 16-18 Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up turned out to be a sort of fun (and profitable) reunion of old friends.

In two previous meetings with Kool Toddy, Ferley had wins at the 2008 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo and the 2009 Snake River Stampede (Nampa, Idaho) – and he was mighty glad to see the Big Bend Rodeo Company mare show up next to his name again.

“When the draw comes out Monday or Tuesday, you are really excited to have her,” Ferley said. “The closer you get to the rodeo, the more you worry about what you have to do to stay on. I was a little nervous, but knew I could ride her. It turned out to be one of my better rides in quite a while. You always know if you ride her right, you’ll be rewarded.”

This time it was with an 89-point score at the Tehama District Fairgrounds, enough to hold off runners-up Alex Wright and Wade Sundell by four points and earn $5,073 in this Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Silver event, presented by Justin Boots.

It was Ferley’s first win of the 2010 season, but he has been a consistent earner, and the win at Red Bluff took him from 11th to ninth place in the PRCA World Standings with earnings of $21,314.

So, the reunion was good.
“I just hope I draw her again,” said Ferley, of Oelrichs, S.D., “at one of the big rodeos on down the road.”
Kool Toddy has been one of the most reliable money makers in saddle bronc riding for the last seven seasons. She has had the distinction of being assigned to the elite 10th round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo every year since 2004 and has produced the highest score in four rounds of the NFR during that span.

A year ago, Jesse Kruse rode Kool Toddy for an arena-record 91 points at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo.
“Kool Toddy is just a great horse,” Ferley said. “From the first time I had her at the DNCFR, she’s just gotten better and better. She’s a solid horse that bucks off a lot of guys, but who can dang sure get you big points.

“Every time out, she jumps and kicks high in the air while staying close to the chutes. She just gives great effort every time.”

Kaycee Feild, who is making an all-out effort to make the final step up to a bareback riding gold buckle this year, continued his winning ways at Red Bluff with an 88-point ride on Growney Brothers’ Raggidy Ann, edging Clint Cannon by two points.

“I’m riding every horse for first, and not just for safety,” Feild told the Red Bluff Daily News. “I’m going for the money.”

Feild’s win follows four others in Rapid City, S.D.; Fort Worth, Texas; Tucson, Ariz.; and Rio Rancho, N.M. It paid him $6,163 and cut a little more than $5,000 off the lead held by bareback riding leader Ryan Gray.

Tyson Durfey followed his win last week at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo in Logandale, Nev., by sharing the tie-down roping average title with eight-time World Champion Fred Whitfield. Both completed two runs in 17.5 seconds.

The other champions at the Red Bluff Round-Up were steer wrestler Ethan Thouvenell (11.1 seconds on two head), team ropers Ty Blasingame/Cody Hintz (11.8 seconds on two head), barrel racer Jill Moody (35.03 seconds on two runs) and bull riders Brady Scott Williams and Clayton Foltyn (91 points).

Oklahoma’s Williams wins inaugural NCFSR
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — It wasn’t flashy, but Ralph Williams was consistent when he had to be and stepped up his game in the finals when he needed to and became the PRCA’s first national circuit finals champion in steer roping.

The Skiatook, Okla., cowboy used runs of 15.2 and 15.4 seconds to assure himself a spot in the semifinals, advanced to the four-man final round with a time of 11.7 seconds and beat out a red-hot Vin Fisher Jr. in the finals with an 11.9-second time. Williams collected $4,449 in the victory, and while circuit finals money does not count toward the PRCA World Standings, it was a big boost for the cowboy.

Williams, who missed his first-round draw from a pen of big steers, said he put himself in position to advance by taking a modest approach that did not place a lot of importance on earning go-round money.

“You can kind of safety up a little bit and hang in there (at steer roping events),” said Williams, who won the event with the help of his 12-year-old horse, Snoopy. “A lot of the steer ropers will kind of safety up just a little bit – maybe not safety up, but ride to a higher percentage catching area, and just do things right. That’s what the old timers always say.”

The Prairie Circuit cowboy’s win overshadowed what had been an otherwise outstanding final day for Fisher. The Andrews, Texas, cowboy placed second in the fourth round before winning the fifth round, the five-round average and the semifinal round. On his final steer, Fisher had to chase a little longer and then had trouble with the tie, settling for a 19.0-second final-round time and a second-place finish.

Although he didn't go home with the championship buckle, Fisher did leave as the high-money cowboy out of the 24-man field, earning a whopping $9,913 of the approximately $39,000 in total prize money at the event, with all but $497 of his total coming on day two.

Eighteen of the 24 cowboys in the field placed in at least one round during the two-day event at the Goshen County Fairgrounds in Torrington. The field was comprised of six ropers each from the Columbia River, Mountain States, Prairie and Texas Circuits. – by Marvin Olberding

Rodeo News and Notes
Gray sets knee surgery for April 27
Ryan Gray, the bareback riding world standings leader and co-world record holder, is scheduled to undergo surgery on his right knee April 27 in Dallas. Dr. Tandy Freeman will repair tears in the meniscus and extract any loose particles he discovers in the joint.

Dr. Freeman will also set a program of rehabilitation for the torn tendons in Gray’s hand.
Gray expects he will miss only 1-2 weeks of competition as a result of the knee procedure.
His traveling partner, three-time and reigning World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote, will undergo a second battery of tests this week in Dallas before Dr. Freeman determines a course of treatment for Mote’s foraminal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal cord opening).

Mote won the first two rounds of the April 7-10 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho, before the acute whiplash he suffered riding Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Spanish Pair in the semifinals pinched nerves in his neck.

In Country Television offers free DVDs of rodeo coverage
In Country Television is offering free DVDs ($6.95 shipping & handling) for each of the 10 PRCA rodeos it is broadcasting this season – eight Gold rodeos on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho, and the All American ProRodeo Finals in Waco, Texas.

Discs providing full coverage of the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo and Rodeo Austin are already available at the In Country Web site (www.incountrytelevision.com/shop.cfm), and fans can pre-order upcoming shows.

The DNCFR airs this Saturday at 8 p.m. (ET) on Dish Network channel 230 and DirecTV channel 344.
“We couldn’t be happier with the way this season is turning out,” said Rob Sigg, president of In Country Television. “We wanted to ensure that rodeo fans who could not catch the action on television could go onto our Web site and order a free DVD copy of all these great PRCA events.”

Bull rider Moore featured on Athlete 360 TV series on Fox
Former Xtreme Bulls Tour champion Mike Moore will be featured on a national telecast of Athlete 360 on the FOX Network next month. The series, which aired regionally last year, takes an inside look at sports medicine and the procedures that are often required to allow athletes to continue competing. Moore’s segment will air May 24-30. Check www.prorodeo.com or local listings for time and channel.

Dr. Mark Adickes, a Super Bowl-winning NFL offensive lineman and Harvard-educated orthopedic surgeon, will host the show, explaining how surgery techniques have improved. He will interview past and current elite athletes about their bodies, and give weekend warriors and parents alike a true inside look at sports.

The Brazile watch …
Despite a frustrating weekend at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, Trevor Brazile remains in reach of breaking his own all-around cowboy record for surpassing $100,000 in earnings at the earliest point in the season.

With his $741 in tie-down roping money at Red Bluff, Brazile has total all-around earnings of $91,553 and rodeos this week at Clovis, Calif., and Lufkin, Texas, to get him the $8,447 he needs to hit six figures.

Brazile surpassed $100,000 in season earnings in Tulsa, Okla., on May 14, 2006, the earliest that any all-around cowboy has hit that milestone by a margin of five weeks (also Brazile, in 2008).

A year ago, he reached April 20 with total earnings of $53,366.
Brazile did manage to cut $232 off Stran Smith’s lead in the tie-down roping world standings and is now just $1,250 out of first place.

And for those eagle-eyed fans who notice that Brazile’s total earnings in team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping come to $368 more than his all-around total – it is not a mistake. Brazile, limited to 70 all-around rodeos in his season count, as opposed to 100 in tie-down roping, opted to unofficial the all-around at Henderson, Texas, where he won, that’s right, $368 in the tie-down roping.

Rodeo Austin breaks 10 records despite down economy
The 73rd annual Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo shattered records in 10 categories last month despite a still-struggling economy. For the first time, both Rodeo Austin (with concerts) and carnival sales reached all-time highs. Rodeo Austin went up 10.2 percent with total attendance of 67,586, and carnivals grew by 6.2 percent.

Other records were surpassed in overall fairgrounds attendance (up 13.1 percent), parking revenue (3.4), official concessionaire sales (17.9), commercial exhibit sales (15.2), fairground food and exhibit sales (48.8), trade sponsorship (34.5) and youth participation (5).

The total contribution from all Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo sources to its education programs is anticipated to exceed $1.5 million this year.

Veteran PRCA pickup man honored with poster image at Mandan, N.D.
The Mandan (N.D.) Rodeo Days Committee publicity poster for the July 2-4 Cowboy Christmas event features veteran PRCA pickup man Jim Wilson, who has worked the rodeo for 14 years.

The print of Wilson, with artwork by Deb Knuth, is the seventh in a series of posters over the years highlighting great moments, notable contestants and contract personnel.

Wilson, of Alzada, Mont., started working as a pickup man when he was 18 years old and has been a PRCA member since 1994.
