Silcox reigns in Laughlin
Wesley Silcox, the reigning World Champion Bull Rider, last weekend claimed his second title on the 2008 Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour, presented by B&W Trailer Hitches. Silcox, of Payson, Utah, rode two bulls for 180 points and earned $12,408.
On Feb. 16, Silcox set an AT&T Center arena record en route to winning the title and $19,368 in San Antonio.
In Laughlin, Silcox got going strong with an 87.5-point ride on Four Star Rodeo’s Tough Target in the first round, good for a third-place check worth $1,918. Despite being bucked off in the second round, Silcox still qualified for the final round, where he took control with a 92.5-point ride aboard Silverado Rodeo’s Malibu to win the round and the average.
In San Antonio, Silcox and Malibu teamed for a 94-point ride, the best ever in the five-year history of the AT&T Center.
Silcox finished two points ahead of Bobby Welsh of Gillette, Wyo., who won the first round with a 91.5-point ride on Broken Arrow Rodeo’s China Grove and put himself in position to win the overall title after scoring 86.5 points in the second round.
Chance Smart of Philadelphia, Miss., who tops both the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings and Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour standings, turned in the top ride of the second round, 88 points on Four Star Rodeo’s Culpert.
Welsh earned $10,829. Chad German of Groesbeck, Texas, the only other bull rider to successfully post a final-round ride, pocketed $5,753
Williams, Bach win Oakdale
Team ropers Speed Williams and Allen Bach, who between them have won 12 world team roping titles, won the two-head average title at the Oakdale (Calif.) Saddle Club Rodeo. Williams, of De Leon, Texas, and Bach, of Weatherford, Texas, won the second round after placing second in the first round to finish with a total time of 11.9 seconds, good for the title and $5,712 each.
Other Oakdale champions were bareback rider Tom McFarland of Wickenburg, Ariz., 83 points, $2,061; steer wrestler Travis Carnine of Stanfield, Ore., 10.2 seconds on two head, $2,664; saddle bronc rider Jess Jones of Spring Creek, Nev., 82 points, $2,180; tie-down roper Scott McCulloch of Morrow Bay, Calif., 18.8 seconds on two head, $3,731; and bull rider Dustin Smith of St. Paul, Ore., 87 points, $2,480.
