CHEYENNE, Wyo. – In the 1990’s Kristie Peterson and her horse Bozo dominated the barrel race at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
They won the coveted buckle here in 1993, then three more times, 1996-98. This year it is Kristie’s daughter Jordon that has moved to the top of the leader board. Peterson and her horse Jester stopped the clock in 17.39 seconds during the second performance of the “Daddy of ‘em All”. This moved them to first place in the second round of competition and combined with their first round time gave them the over-all lead with a total of 35.34 seconds. This is nearly one-half second faster than the woman in second place, Kelli Tolbert from Hinckley, Utah.
Bareback rider Zach Curran, from Arvada, Colo., continued his winning ways with an 81-point effort in the second round. He now has the over-all lead with 165 points on two rides. The new leader in the second round is Kaycee Feild, from Elk Ridge, Utah. Feild, is currently fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. He is likely to get some money with that ride, but is tied for fifth in the over-all standings and will have to wait through the next seven performances to see if that makes the cut for the finals, July 26.
Mike Matt showed rodeo fans the toughness that it takes to be a bullfighter and multiplied it times ten. In the first section of bull riding, he got stepped on and rolled under a bull. That resulted in a cut on his elbow that required over 20 stitches and a cut on his shin that needed 7 more. The Collinsville, Okla., resident was put back together by the Justin Sports Medicine team. He was back during the third section taking care of business and protecting bull riders.
The third performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will begin at Frontier Park at 12:45 p.m. on Monday. A new set of cowboys will compete in all of the events and barrel racers will make their second appearance.
