LAS VEGAS -- There were few surprises in the bareback riding in Round 8 of the 51st Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. It was no surprise that there was a tie for first place -- five of the eight rounds have ended with ties at the top -- and the cowboys who tied for the victory in front of 17,306 at the Thomas & Mack Center are the event's top two in the PRCA World Standings.

Two-time World Champion Bobby Mote and world standings leader Clint Cannon tied for the "eliminator pen" round win with scores of 84.5 points to each earn $15,343 and set up a two-round shootout for the world title. Mote's score came aboard Western Rodeos' Big Easy, while Cannon rode 2005 USST/PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year Real Deal of the Carr Pro Rodeo string.

"The eliminator pen is, by far, the meanest, rankest pen in ProRodeo. Everybody’s got a different look on their face when they come in here whenever it’s the “E” pen," Cannon said. "I usually shine during the “E” pen because I condition myself for those types of horses, so it seems to work out for me. I started out the week slow, but the last two days have been really good, and all I can pray for is two more good ones to give me a shot against Bobby because he’s having a really good NFR right now."

Mote, of Culver, Ore., leads the Wrangler NFR average race with 672 points on eight head, while Cannon is 10th with 567 points on seven head. Cannon, of Waller, Texas, leads the PRCA World Standings with $266,585, and Mote is second with $231,986.

"I’ve had him before, but he’s never had that trip," Mote said of Big Easy. "I’ve won a round at Salinas on him, and I’ve won a round in Fort Worth on him. He’s a good horse. He’s big, but he ain’t easy. Here, I ended up having $170,000 and being a half-year behind (Clint) still coming in here. That makes you lift your game when you’ve got competition that’s out there putting your feet to the fire. I’m really grateful he's had the year he’s had, and it ain’t done yet. I’ve got two more chances to go and win as much as I can, and that’s what I’m going to do."

The final two rounds will determine who goes home with the bareback riding gold buckle.

"Right now, I feel like I’m getting my groove back again, where I can get on anything and just ride it," Cannon said. "It took a bucker to get it, and all I can do is just pray for two more good ones and see where the books fall."

Cannon and Mote will grimace through pain in the final two rounds as they fight for the gold buckle, as both cowboys appeared on the Justin Sportsmedicine injury report after Round 8. Cannon will compete while hampered with a left groin straing, and Mote will climb aboard two more bucking horses with a strained neck.

Stockton Graves' solid week got $17,139 better after the Newkirk, Okla., bulldogger won Round 8 with a time of 3.4 seconds. He finished two-tenths of a second ahead of 2006 World Champion Dean Gorsuch to cross the $100,000 mark in season earnings and move to seventh in the PRCA World Standings.

"I didn't do too much to prepare," Graves said about his Round 8 steer. "Luke (Branquinho) called me and told me I had that steer. He had him earlier, and that's a good steer. He leaves good, and he's always thrown really well. So, the plan was just go as fast as you could go, basically. I've made a couple mistakes (this week) and not done very well. Last night, well, bad things happen. On 10 head, it's tough to make good runs on all 10 steers. Things are going to go bad for you, and then they're going to go good for you, so you just roll with the punches and take what's given to you."

Branquinho, the two-time and reigning world champion, continues to lead the Wrangler NFR average standings with a total time of 34.0 seconds, but finished out of the money in Round 8. That allowed 2005 World Champion Lee Graves to re-take the lead in the PRCA World Standings by taking third place and pocketing $10,228 on Canadian Night at the Wrangler NFR. Graves, who sits third in the average, has $189,569 heading into Round 9, while Branquinho is second with $182,493.

The team of Travis Tryan and Michael Jones won their third round of the Wrangler NFR, stopping the clock in 3.8 seconds to finish one-tenth of a second ahead of Clay Tryan and Cory Petska. The win moved Travis Tryan to third in the PRCA World Standings and Jones to second, just $82 behind heeling leader Jade Corkill. Corkill's partner, 2007 World Champion Chad Masters, continues to lead the world standings among headers, but they stand 12th in the Wrangler NFR average and are unlikely to cash an average check in two days.

"I told Joe Beaver before the rodeo tonight, 'You'll see me in the victory lap tonight,'" Jones said. "I've been in this position several times throughout my career here at the Finals. I really just like being fast and going for first. I like the victory laps, and I like being three (seconds). We need to do really well on the last two to have a chance at the championship. The steer I missed in the middle of the week in Round 5 cost us quite a bit in the average. Hopefully we can keep winning the rounds and maybe even move up a few spots, and maybe we'll have a chance."

The win couldn't have come at a better time for the talented team.

"It was huge," Tryan said. "It looked like we needed about three first-place checks to finish it out with three rounds to go, and we got one right there. Now we'll try to continue on for the last two. We're not going to back off what we do best, and going fast is what we do best. It's been our game plan all week."

Cody DeMoss had to sit and watch the Wrangler NFR from the sidelines in 2008 after finishing 16th in the world, but he's back in Las Vegas as a competitor and, now, as a round winner. DeMoss, of Heflin, La., rode Bar T Rodeo's Robins Best for 87.5 points to win Round 8 by 2.5 over 2007 World Champion Taos Muncy and earn $17,139.

"It’s great to be back," said DeMoss, who is riding with a torn right ACL. "Last year was an eye-opener for me. I finally started drawing a few good ones and I just thank the Lord for getting me back here (to the Wrangler NFR)."

Shaun Stroh continues to lead the Wrangler NFR average standings with 648 points, and Jesse Kruse leads the PRCA World Standings among saddle bronc riders with $169,309.

Josh Peek earned his second tie-down roping win of the Wrangler NFR after taking the eighth performance with a 7.0-second run. The Pueblo, Colo., cowboy finished eight-tenths of a second ahead of Tyson Durfey to add $17,139 to his season total. Peek has now earned an event-best $55,841 in Las Vegas to move from 15th to sixth in the PRCA World Standings.

"It was a flawless run," said Peek, who is also competing in steer wrestling at this year's Wrangler NFR. "I really slowed down and made sure to get a good start -- that calf was a little bit slow and I knew it -- so I made sure I got a really good start, focused on getting (the calf) roped sharp, and then from there I slowed down and went through the motions. My horse, Cody, has been amazing this week. He's just right; he's not too strong, he's not too weak. He's given me a chance to reach out there and rope those calves and set everything up, and that's made a world of difference."

The tie-down roping win kept Peek mathematically alive in the all-around world standings race, but Trevor Brazile will likely clinch his record-tying seventh all-around crown after Round 9. An average title, however, is more of a realistic goal for Peek, who stands third in the tie-down roping average and sixth in the steer wrestling average.

"It would be amazing, and it's definitely one of my goals," Peek said of winning an average crown. "I feel like I'm having a strong week. Who knows what will happen, but you can't think of the awards. I have two more calves, two more steers, and I just want to go rope and have fun. If I win an average title, that's the icing on the cake. I've had a great week, I've had a lot of fun, and my wife (Kori) and I and the babies (Keagan and Emry) are just enjoying Vegas thoroughly. Whether we're winning any money or not, we're excited to be out here."

Brazile leads the tie-down roping world standings with $166,227, and Clint Robinson is second with $132,462. Five-time World Champion Tie-Down Roper Cody Ohl remains a threat for the gold buckle, standing third in the world standings and fourth in the Wrangler NFR average. Tuf Cooper leads the average with a total time of 67.7 seconds.

Bull rider Kanin Asay won his second round of this year's Finals, taking the $17,139 first-place check thanks to an 87-point ride on D&H Cattle's Grey Dog. That was eight points better than 2006 World Champion B.J. Schumacher -- the only other bull rider to make the eight-second whistle in Round 8 -- and moved Asay to third in the PRCA World Standings.

"I’m pleased with the ride because last night I tweaked my (left and riding) shoulder," said Asay, who also won the first performance this year. "It’s the one I dislocated earlier this year, and it’s sore. When you nod your head, all pain goes away."

Asay's Round 8 victory moved him atop the Wrangler NFR average standings with a four-head total of 341 points. Reigning World Champion J.W. Harris, who has sat out four rounds due to a broken right (riding) hand, continues to lead the PRCA World Standings with $219,275, with two-round winner Corey Navarre in second with $149,010.

Brittany Pozzi, the 2007 world champion barrel racer, won her second round of the 2009 Wrangler NFR by stopping the clock in 13.77 seconds. That was four-hundredths of a second better than Shelley Morgan and brought Pozzi a bit closer to reigning World Champion and world standings leader Lindsay Sears. Sears, of Nanton, Alberta, finished third in the round to earn $10,228 and holds a $4,796 lead over Pozzi in the world standings.

"Tonight was amazing," Pozzi said. "Duke ran great, and it all seemed perfect. Getting a barrel (knocked over in Round 7) did move me down one hole in the average, but it wasn't devastating. I just have to run hard at each round and win. This is really a horse race, and it will come down to the last run. This is what winning a world title is about. It makes it all exciting and fun."

Sears, who has placed in every round and won Rounds 2 and 7, leads the average standings with a total time of 111.0 seconds, while Pozzi is fourth with a 116.6-second total time.
