DAYTON, Iowa – Monday’s final performance of the Dayton Championship Rodeo featured plenty of action and a flair for the dramatic.

It also featured some of the top contestants in the sport of ProRodeo, those that have qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the season-ending championship in Las Vegas. In all, thousands of fans got to witness all the athleticism and pageantry of rodeo over the Labor Day weekend.

“We’re just happy to have the contestants, the rodeo committee and the community come together,” said Jim Heckman, president of the volunteer rodeo committee that produces the annual rodeo. “We’re just pleased that we were able to pit on this quality of an event.”

Bareback rider Jared Smith of Cross Plains, Texas, had a solid day, riding the Cervi Rodeo horse Baby Doll for 77 points to finish third in the first go-round. The then matched moves with Hustlin’ Lady for 81 points to finish runner-up in the second round and finished second in the two-ride average. In all, he won $917. Bo Casper of Fort Scott, Kan., won both rounds and the average title and $1,37

Three-time NFR qualifier Sherrylynn Johnson of Henryetta, Okla., rounded the cloverleaf pattern in 16.23 seconds to finish third in barrel racing. For that, she earned $708. Terrah Hanks of Eaton Rapids, Mich., won the title with a 16.04-second run and earned $992.

“The enthusiasm of our crowd has really made us happy with the way the weekend went,” Heckman said. “We had Jake McVey two nights and a dance for three nights, and it was a huge success. That’s pretty special for us to have that good of a response in the first year we had a dance.

“This was a good rodeo, and there were a lot of people who worked really hard to make it that way. We’re happy the crowd enjoyed it, too.”
