First Day Results For The George Strait Team Roping Classic

San Antonio, TX (March 15, 2008) -- The 26th Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic (GSTRC) kicked off Friday, March 14th at the San Antonio Rose Palace with 483 teams competing in round one. The number of contestants was down from last year with the general consensus of those present that high fuel prices are playing a significant role in number of contestants at all events this year. In direct contrast the number of spectators has shown an increase.

 

Top winners of the first round are:

  1. Camish Jennings/Brandon Bates 4.36 Seconds $15,540 team winnings
  2. Kevin Daniels/Brad Culpepper 4.38 Seconds $9,324 team winnings
  3. Jake Barnes/Cory Petska 4.52 Seconds $6,216 team winnings

 

There were 227 teams who roped in 11 seconds or less and qualified for Round Two. At the end of Round Two the following 50 teams advanced to competition on Saturday, March 15th:

These top 50 teams will be competing in three final rounds final three rounds for the Chevy Silverado pickups from Cavendar Chevrolet (Boerne, TX) and Strait X-treme 3-horse slant trailers from Bruton Trailers. The total cash payout this year GSTRC is $518,000 plus prizes worth more than $160,000.

 

The GSTRC continues the "Red Wrapped Challenge"- sponsored by Wayne Wright Injury Lawyers- an exciting $10,000 per round progressive contest. If no winners in the first two rounds, $40,000 is up for grabs in the final round.

The 26th Annual GSTRC has become the premiere open consistently attracting the biggest names in the sport each year including past GSTRC champions Brad Culpepper, Jake Barnes, Speed Williams, Rich Skelton, Tyler Magnus, Clay O'Brien Cooper, Allen Bach, Matt Tyler, Nick Sartain and Jhett Johnson. But it’s not just for the big names. As an open roping, ropers of all levels may compete alongside each other for a chance at the winnings. In 2007, 675 teams competed for more than $500,000 in cash and prizes. Nick Sartain and Jhett Johnson were the big winners.
