CHEYENNE, Wyo. – After two solid runs in team roping, the 2007 world champion header, Chad Masters and his partner Jade Corkill are set to win a Cheyenne Frontier Days Buckle.
Masters, from Clarksville, Tenn., and Corkill, from Fallon, Nev., moved into third place in the over-all standings thanks to runs of 8.6 and 9.4 here on Friday and Saturday. Masters is leading the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings and Corkill is in second place behind Richard Durham, from Morgan Mill, Texas, who also qualified for the finals here with Blaine Linaweaver from Leavenworth, Kan. These two teams tied for sixth place in the first round of competition and each of the four men has already won $1,764.
None of them has won a Cheyenne Frontier Days Championship and will be in line behind leaders Brock Hanson from Casa Grande, Ariz., and Shane Philipp from Washington, Texas, who have a total time of 16.8 seconds on two runs. Masters and Corkill have an 18.0 and Linaweaver and Durham have 20.1. In most arenas, a four-second lead would be huge, but with a 30-foot head start for the cattle, anything can happen here and it usually does.
“We were real happy with our first run,” Masters said. “Our second steer really ran. I was a little late (getting out) and thankfully was able to catch up. I’m really glad we could make it work and glad that run is over. This is a big arena and a traditional rodeo and runs like that are what makes it exciting.”
Will Lowe had another successful ride here on Saturday and overtook the lead in the over-all standings. He has a combined total of 174 points on two rides. His traveling partner Royce Ford, from Briggsdale, Colo., is right behind him at 169. Lowe and Ford took part in a benefit Friday night. to raise money for their traveling partner Tom McFarland who was injured at Pecos in June. An auction was held at Frontier Park and a buckle that Lowe won at the 2007 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was the high-selling item at $3,500. A total of $30,000 was raised to help McFarland support his wife and three daughters while he recovers from breaking his wrist and arm 26 times. He had surgery and is hoping for a full recovery.
Sunday’s action gets underway at 12:45 a.m.
