FORT WORTH, Texas --- Twenty years ago on Jan. 31, rodeo legend Roy Cooper added to his family when his youngest son Tuf was born.
Tuf celebrated his birthday in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum by roping and tying a calf in 7.6 seconds, the fastest run of the rodeo so far. That effort put him at the top of the leader board in the second round of competition at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. He is also in position to qualify for the final round which is just one week away.
He had his success aboard a new horse named Freckles. The 13-year-old gelding is owned by Cooper and Freddie Vest from Whitesboro, Texas.
“It takes great horses to win and I got one of them,” Cooper said. “He’s just awesome. This is one of the best birthdays ever.”
Adding to the celebration was having one of his best friends and traveling partners be successful as well. Tuf watched as Shane Hanchey from Sulphur, La., roped and tied his calf in 9.5 seconds. Combined with his first round time, Shane is now tied for second place in the over-all standings with Caddo Lewallen from Morrison, Okla. They both have total times of 18.6 seconds on two runs.
The picture would have been complete if Tuf’s older brother Clif could have got to the pay window, but some bad luck left him with a 13.6 second run that won’t get him anywhere. Clif is a student at Weatherford (Texas) College and has had his own success as the 2008 rookie of the year in the tie-down roping while also qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo.
The two Coopers started hanging out with Hanchey at junior rodeos and jackpots. It wasn’t long until they were talking on the phone and now they are traveling together in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Hanchey is coming off of his rookie season with a confidence and desire that has taken him to the number one position in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. He is leading the first round of competition at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D.
“I’m a whole lot calmer than I was last year,” Hanchey said. “I’m ahead of where I was last year in the mental game and that’s made a big difference.”
Hanchey is riding an 11 year old horse that he calls Riata that was trained by his older brother. “I have so much confidence in my horse,” Hanchey added. “I know exactly how he was trained. It’s all a team effort.”
There are two performances of the Worlds Original Indoor Rodeo on Monday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
