A pair of second-place finishes wasn't so bad for Kelly Timberman after all. Added up, they made the 2004 World Champion Bareback Rider the average champion for the second year in a row at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo, which concluded April 13 in Logandale, NV.

Timberman, of Mills, Wyo., strung together rides of 82 and 83 points to record a two-head score of 165 points, one point ahead of Josi Young of Kimberly, Idaho.

An 83-point ride aboard Growney Rodeo’s Moulin Rouge, the most outstanding bareback horse of the 2003 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, clinched the title for Timberman, who earlier this season claimed titles in Kissimmee, Fla., and San Angelo, Texas. He earned $4,922 for his efforts.

Another past world champion, team roper (heading) Matt Sherwood of Queen Creek, Ariz., and tie-down roper Tuf Cooper of Decatur, Texas, the son of eight-time World Champion and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper, also claimed average titles in their respective events at Logandale.

Sherwood, the 2006 world champion who didn’t qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year, continued his fast start with heeler Randon Adams, roping in his hometown. The team, which earlier won the average title in Fort Worth, Texas, recorded a four-head time of 23.3 seconds, just one-tenth of a second ahead of legendary ropers and seven-time world champions Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper, to claim the title and $5,169 each.

Cooper, an 18-year-old ProRodeo rookie, didn’t rope like one as he cruised to the four-head average title with a time of 41.9 seconds, two seconds better than Kody Curry of Athens, Texas. Cooper, who finished second to reigning and five-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile two weeks ago in Huntsville, Texas, earned his first PRCA average title and checks worth $5,372.

The other Logandale average champions were steer wrestler Ken Lewis of La Junta, Colo., 19.1 seconds on four head, $5,544; saddle bronc riders Heith DeMoss of Crowville, La., and Cody Wright of Milford, Utah, 165 points on two head, $3,307 each; and bull rider Stormy Wing of Dalhart, Texas, 172 points on two head, $5,850.
