CALGARY, ALTA. – It’s been a busy rodeo week in Western Canada, and even busier in the Canadian standings.

Most notable is Scandia, Alta. bull rider Devon Mezei who just took over first place in the bull riding standings from 2008 Canadian bull riding champion Tyler Thomson. Mezei tied with fellow Albertan Jason Finkbeiner for first place at the Medicine Hat Stampede with an 85 and earned $2,738. He scored another 85-point ride at the Coombs Pro Rodeo in Coombs, B.C. for a second place cheque of $1,714, and picked up an additional $741 for his 83.5 ride in La Crete. This adds up to $26,473, more than $2,000 ahead of Thomson, who now sits at second.

Bull rider Scott Schiffner of Strathmore, Alta. also made a significant jump in the standings. His weekend earnings bumped him from 27th place to 16th after placing at Coombs, Medicine Hat and at the Bruce Stampede in Bruce, Alta.

In the steer wrestling, all eyes are on Ponoka, Alta. cowboy Brock Butterfield and Eckville, Alta.’s Scott Wyzykoski. Butterfield was launched into 10th place from 21st, and Wyzykoski was propelled from 22nd to 13th. Butterfield took home first place honours and $3,081 with a time of 3.6 seconds at the Wrangler Canadian Professional Rodeo Tour in Medicine Hat, while Wyzykoski picked up cheques totalling over $3,100 at Bruce, Alta., Coombs, B.C., and LaCrete, Alta.
