CHEYENNE, Wyo. – They may not have dominated the rodeo, and they didn’t overtake the early lead, but there were a lot of successful bull rides at the third performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
Lonnie Carpenter from Haysville, Kan., leads the first round with a 90. Leader of the pack today was Bradley Pierce, the 2007 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year. Pierce, originally from Australia, came to the U.S. to rodeo and attend college at Western Texas College in Snyder. He went back to Australia to work on his family’s cattle ranch and was competing there, but missed the camaraderie and is still pursuing his goal of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He finished 22nd in 2007, just outside of the top 15 that qualify for rodeo’s championship event.
Pierce just recently made the trip back here and is living in Baird, Texas. He got on the bull named Reality TV owned by Four L Rodeo & Diamond S Rodeo. Coming back to the competition here was definitely a good decision as Pierce is now second in the first round with an 89 and stands to get a paycheck. There were a total of 10 successful rides out of the 30 bull riders here on Monday. All 30 of them will have their second appearance here Tuesday and be hoping for similar results. The 20 with the highest total combined scores from two rides will advance to Sunday’s finals.
Cody Gardner, who lives just down the road at Fort Lupton, Colo., and Marcus Michaelis from Caldwell, Idaho were next in line with 85-point efforts. They are now tied for third place in the first round.
Ryan Gray is just coming off of a win at the California Rodeo Salinas and is keeping the momentum going. He had an 84 point ride on Kinney Rodeo’s Stepper to move into a tie for the lead in the first round. Gray has won the Salinas buckle three times and is looking to add the Cheyenne Frontier Days buckle to his collection.
Not only are buckles and cash up for grabs at the 113th Daddy of ‘em All, it is also a stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots. This rodeo is the seventh of eight in the gold-tier. At the end of the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo, the top 24 competitors in all of the events will advance to the first leg of the Justin Boots Playoffs in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 11-13. The tour standings as well as the world standings are based on earnings so every dollar won here at Cheyenne has double importance for the competitors.
The fourth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will begin at Frontier Park at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
