SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- In any rodeo, consistently doing well adds up to high scores, fast times and pay checks. That’s true here in San Antonio even though the format is not that of a traditional event.

Most rodeos pay the lion’s share of the prize money based on a contestant’s performance over several round. Their scores and times are added together for an over-all total where championships and paychecks are awarded. The San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo wanted to give more contestants opportunities so changed their format and continue to tweak it to make it better for the contestants.

Chad Ferley from Oelrichs, S.D., is just one contestant benefitting from the new format. Ferley won the third round in the third bracket on Saturday night. He also had two second place finishes in the previous rounds and is the high money winner in the bracket so far with $5,185. He will hope to add to that on Sunday afternoon with his fourth round competition. However, even if he bucks off, he already has won enough money to advance to the semi-finals.

“I ride for first every time I nod my head,” Ferley said. “Hopefully I’ll get another check tomorrow. But since our success here is based on money, it’s good that I can already make my plans to come back for the semi-finals.”

Wes Stevenson, from Lubbock, Texas, is the leader in the bareback riding with $4,148. One of Stevenson’s traveling partners, Tom McFarland is also looking good for the semi-finals here. McFarland has total earnings of $3,111 after winning round one and placing in round three. Stevenson has been the most consistent bareback rider in this bracket placing in all three rounds. Dusty LaValley, from Crooked Creek, Alberta is second with $3,371.

Ted Bert from Modesto, Calif., was one happy bull rider on Saturday night. Bert’s name was beside Hot Diggity Damn, a bull owned by Cervi and Guidry Rodeo Company that has a reputation for being rider friendly and getting high marks. The bull lived up to his reputation and Bert did his part. When the judges totaled their markings, Bert was high atop the leader board with 91 points. He and Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, S.D., are tied for first place in the money standings with $3,630 each. With the majority of bull riders hitting the dirt in this bracket, both are looking good for the semi-finals.

There are two performances at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Sunday, at 1 and 7:30 p.m. The matinee performance will see the third bracket competing in the fourth preliminary round. The fourth group of contestants will make their first appearance here on Sunday evening.
