RENO, Nev. --- At the conclusion of Saturday night’s rodeo nearly $500,000 in prize money will have been distributed and nine pairs of championship spurs will be added to rodeo contestant’s trophy cases.

Cody Ohl is one of those cowboys that is looking for those spurs. Ohl, from Hico, Texas, moved into the lead in the tie-down roping with his 8.5-second run on Friday night. He had a 9.2 earlier in the day to give him a total to 17.7 seconds.

With an world all-around title and five more in tie-down roping it would seem that Ohl would have won every major rodeo on the circuit. That however is not the case. He has been runner up here, but has yet to get the spurs. He is hoping to change that on Saturday.

Steven Peebles who is in the lead for the Rookie of the Year honors in bareback riding also put himself in position to win the spurs. His 77-point effort on Friday was the best of the performance, but put him in a tie for sixth place over-all. Kaycee Feild, the 2008 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Champion is in first place with 168 points. Field is from Elk Ridge, Utah. His father Lewis won this rodeo 24 years ago.

Lindsay Sears from Nanton, Alberta, leads the barrel race and will compete here in spite of breaking her leg earlier in the week. She has been riding and even competed at the Ponoka Stampede in Alberta. She tried riding with a brace but found that a cast would do better. She will be aboard her great horse Martha and will be in line for her first spurs.

The final performance of the Reno Rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
