1. Etbauer on verge of making (more) rodeo history
HOUSTON – Houston has a long and storied history of watching things soar to new heights – think NASA, here – and the rodeo fans at Reliant Stadium will have something pretty special to keep on their radar this week.

When five-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Billy Etbauer enters the second round of Super Series V tonight at RodeoHouston, he will be $8,452 away from joining Trevor Brazile as the only $3 million cowboys in the history of professional rodeo.

Perhaps more significantly, Etbauer is $9,786 shy of becoming the first man to earn $3 million in a single rodeo event (yes, Billy has $1,335 in career team roping money).

“I didn’t honestly realize I was that close,” Etbauer said with a slight shake of his head. “That’s amazing. I just wish I had all that money in my pocket today. But it’s a true blessing to be healthy and be able to continue doing something you love.

“It’s been a lot of years since my brothers (Dan and Robert), Craig (Latham) and I started down this road, pooling our prize money so we could keep going. It’s always been a family effort; Craig still does all my entering for me. And I couldn’t do this without the continued support of Express Ranches. They are the biggest part of why I’m still able to go do this.”

With $2,000 first-place money in each round of Super Series V plus a $4,000 award for highest average score, Etbauer could get pretty close to both milestones even before the semifinals ($2,000 for first place) or that $50,000 Shootout Round on March 20. He is tied for fourth in the average after one round of Super Series V with 79.5 points.

Etbauer, 47, has won RodeoHouston three times, most recently in 2008, when he defeated Canadian Rod Hay in a ride-off and earned $55,000.

His nephew, Trell Etbauer (Robert’s son), has already qualified for the semifinals in saddle bronc riding and will compete again on March 17.

“I’m looking forward to watching him ride that night,” Billy Etbauer said. “Now I’ve just got to do my part and make it into the semifinals on the 18th.”

Etbauer moved ahead of Joe Beaver into second place on the career earnings list at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December and is already first on the career list for most money won in a single event ($2,990,214), with tie-down roper Fred Whitfield second ($2,805,546) and Dan Mortensen third ($2,536,631).

Etbauer holds the record for most Wrangler NFR qualifications by a roughstock cowboy (21 and counting), the record for most round victories in the Wrangler NFR in any event (51) and he holds the distinction of being the only cowboy to have more than $1 million in earnings at the Wrangler NFR.

1A. McFarland goes back on the injured list with broken femur
Bareback rider Tom McFarland, who missed the second half of the 2009 season with a devastating arm injury, is back on the sidelines after suffering a broken right femur March 10 at RodeoHouston.

McFarland, 26, was stepped on by a horse – it is unclear whether it was the bronc he was riding or a pickup man’s horse – after completing a third-place ride on the final night of Super Series III that would have assured him a spot in the semifinals.

He underwent surgery in Houston on March 11, during which doctors inserted pins just above the knee, and is expected to miss three months of competition.

“The doctor told us that if the break had been a half-inch higher, he probably would have had to sit out the rest of the year,” said McFarland’s wife, Ashley.

McFarland, a four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier, had his right arm broken in more than 25 places last June in Pecos, Texas, when his bareback mount reared up in the chutes and then fell on him.

Aided by funding from the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund and benefits put on by his many friends in the rodeo community, McFarland, 26, got through the enforced hiatus and rehabbed so well that he was second to Kaycee Feild in the world standings with $22,157 at the time of his latest injury.

Bull rider R.C. Landingham of Pendleton, Ore., suffered broken ribs, a fractured scapula, a collapsed lung and a lacerated liver March 5 at RodeoHouston. He also is expected to miss three months.

Idaho bull rider Marcus Michaelis, second in the world standings, suffered a dislocated left thumb at RodeoHouston last week and was to have X-rays taken today to determine the extent of the injury.

1b. Lowe returns to action at RodeoHouston, ties for first place
Three-time World Champion Bareback Rider Will Lowe returned to competition March 14 for the first time since suffering a strained neck aboard Kesler Rodeo’s Painted Smile in the eighth round of the 2009 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. As a result of the injury and the forced time away from the arena, the Canyon, Texas, cowboy decided to undergo surgery to have the labrum in his right shoulder repaired on Dec. 16.

RodeoHouston was his first rodeo back, and he appeared to have returned in top form, turning in an 80-point ride to finish in a four-way tie for first in the first round of Super Series V. He will compete again tonight and Tuesday night in Houston, in hopes of finishing among the top four money earners in that bracket and advancing to the semifinal round.

STATISTICAL ODDITY: All three reigning roughstock champions at RodeoHouston – bareback rider Clint Cannon, saddle bronc rider Bryce Miller and bull rider Douglas Duncan – have qualified for this year’s semifinal round, while all four of the 2009 timed event champions failed to make it – steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy, team ropers Kelsey Parchman/Richard Durham, tie-down roper Ryan Watkins and barrel racer Mary Burger.

2. DNCFR field loaded with past, present world champions

The 24th installment of the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo – April 7-10 in Pocatello, Idaho – is shaping up to be quite the show. With 11 past or present world champions and dozens of Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers among the 164 cowboys entered in the $500,000 event, things could get interesting at Holt Arena on the campus of Idaho State University.

Several of this year’s competitors already know what it’s like to claim DNCFR titles, and the remainder of the field is hungry to join their ranks. Five-figure pay days – which don’t count toward the PRCA World Standings – $20,000 Dodge truck vouchers and many other prizes await the cowboys who can ascend to the top at the end of four intense days of competition.

4. Rodeo News and Notes
Duarte becomes 84th millionaire cowboy; ranks fifth among bull riders
Veteran bull rider Myron Duarte became the 84th PRCA cowboy to surpass $1 million in career earnings Feb. 28 when he picked up a $330 check for finishing eighth in the average at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz.

An eight-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Duarte ($1,000,210) ranks fifth in career bull riding earnings behind Tuff Hedeman ($1,243,648), B.J. Schumacher ($1,195,350), Cody Hancock ($1,129,826) and Ted Nuce ($1,128,590).

Ty Murray and Jesse Bail, the only other bull riders to have more than $1 million in career earnings, are all-around hands who are well ahead of the bull-riding specialists on the list because they consistently banked checks in other roughstock events.

Murray earned more than $500,000 in each of the three events, led by his $727,591 in bull riding. At the end of 2009, Bail had $770,488 as a bull rider and $794,350 as a saddle bronc rider.

Proctor/Long big winners at George Strait Team Roping Classic
Longtime partners Coleman Proctor and Jake Long beat 468 other teams at the March 12-13 George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio with a time of 14.93 seconds on three head and each won $79,815 cash along with a truck, horse trailer, saddle, buckle, Resistol roping bag and Wrangler jacket.

“I don’t know when this is going to sink in, but it’s pretty incredible,” Long said. “Coleman and I have been friends since we were knee-high to a grasshopper, and to do this together is probably the most special thing that has ever happened to us.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” Proctor said. “We’ve been to this roping for so many years, and we’ve dreamed about this for so long.”

Brothers Riley and Brady Minor, of Ellensburg, Wash., finished second and banked $31,926 each.
Total awards at this 28th annual event reached nearly $700,000, including prize money of $478,500.

Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame inducts seven
The Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame will add seven inductees to its ranks in ceremonies this October in Calgary, Alberta – Floyd Peters, Phil Doan, Gordon Doan, Everett Vold, Clayton Hines, Edith Malesh, and Harvey Northcott’s Canadian champion saddle bronc horse Wyatt Earp.

Peters, of Cardston, Alberta, won the Canadian steer decorating championship in 1945 and three consecutive Canadian tie-down roping championships from 1945 to 1947. He is one of only two cowboys to win a Canadian championship in both of those timed events, along with 1993 CPRHF inductee Kenny McLean.

ProRodeo Livestock video available for free
A 20-minute video, titled ProRodeo Livestock, is available free of charge to rodeo enthusiasts through the PRCA Industry Outreach Department in Colorado Springs, Colo. The educational video covers rodeo history, livestock care, PRCA stock contractors’ born-to-buck breeding program and PRCA rules that govern the safety of animals in competition.

PRCA stock contractors Dona Vold Larsen (Triple V Rodeo Company) and Jim Korkow (Korkow Rodeos) speak in the video, and several cowboys talk about the athletic ability of bucking horses and bulls and also discuss rodeo equipment.

Three-time and reigning World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote, 2006 World Champion Bull Rider B.J. Schumacher and 19-time Wrangler NFR saddle bronc qualifier Rod Hay are among the cowboys featured in the video.

Representatives of rodeo committees, rodeo clubs, Western youth groups and other organizations wishing to get a copy of the free video may call PRCA Industry Outreach Director Cindy Schonholtz at 719.593.8840 or e-mail requests to animalwelfare@prorodeo.com.
