Healthy again, Dent, Harris put on show at Rodeo Austin
AUSTIN, Texas – Anybody who’s a sucker for comeback stories might want to get their TiVo set right now for the April 10 In Country telecast of Rodeo Austin (7 p.m. ET, Dish Network, channel 230 and DirecTV, channel 344).
Bareback rider Steven Dent is at the top of the bill. The Mullen, Neb., cowboy shared first place in two of three rounds in this Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Gold rodeo to win the bareback riding and all-around championships with $7,900.
It was Dent’s first major title since he tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last June – an injury that sidelined him for three prime months and kept him out of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the first time in three years.
“Things are finally starting to come together after being hurt,” Dent said. “It takes a while to get things going to where you are back at a level where you can compete for a world title. The guys we are trying to beat are the best in the world.”
Because of that injury, Dent’s place in the bareback riding world standings dropped from second in 2008 to 20th a year ago, and his rodeo income fell from $210,799 to $51,984.
Now that he’s healthy again, Dent is starting to look like the guy who experts predicted could be the first roughstock cowboy since Ty Murray in 1998 to win an all-around gold buckle.
Already fifth in the 2010 bareback riding world standings when he entered the March 15-27 rodeo at Travis County Expo Center, Dent has now moved up to third place, passing Micky Downare and three-time World Champion Bobby Mote.
“(The comeback) has taken a little longer than I wanted it to,” Dent said, “but I am getting closer to where I want to be. I’m happy that I’m getting back to having some consistency.”
Bull rider J.W. Harris understands what Dent is saying. He broke his right (riding) hand at last December’s Wrangler NFR and had been struggling to get back to top form until he arrived in Austin.
Harris won one of Austin’s two Xtreme Bulls qualifying events earlier this month and then stuck around to win the big one on March 27.
He won the short round with an 87-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo Company’s Ariat Aches & Pains to put the finishing touches on his dominating win. Harris was the only bull rider in a field of 70 to complete all three rounds and had 238 points.
The $6,082 he earned moved him from 13th place to 12th as he attempts to become the first bull rider to win three consecutive world championships since Don Gay from 1979-81.
Two second-place finishes and a tie for third allowed Matt Reeves to run away with the steer wrestling title – his total time of 11.3 seconds was 1.2 seconds better than runner-up Ronnie Fields – and earn a rodeo-best $8,678.
The other champions at Rodeo Austin were team ropers Erich Rogers and Monty Joe Petska (16.3 seconds on three head, $7,064 each in total earnings), saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell (253 points on three head, $7,670), tie-down roper Scott Kormos (23.9 seconds on three head, $7,641) and barrel racer Lisa Lockhart (46.15 seconds on three runs, $5,604).
Sundell completes big-money weekend with win in Laughlin, Nev.
LAUGHLIN, Nev. – A hectic travel schedule that had saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell commuting between Texas and southern Nevada paid off in a big way over the weekend.
Sundell won Rodeo Austin on March 27 and the Laughlin River Stampede March 28 for total earnings of $11,860 and an advance from sixth to fifth place in the PRCA World Standings.
Sundell had an 86-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Miss Monida at Laughlin to edge 2007 World Champion Taos Muncy and Isaac Diaz by a single point.
Unlike Sundell, an Iowa native whose options were far from home and farther from home, brothers Jay and Austin Adams had only to drive down from the family place in Logandale, Nev., in order to win the team roping title.
The Austins won the first round and the two-head average for earnings of $3,168 each. Their time of 11.3 seconds was 1.3 seconds quicker than the second-place team of Britt Williams and Bobby Harris.
The other champions at the $152,026 Laughlin River Stampede were bareback riders Chris Harris and Wes Stevenson (84 points), steer wrestler Erik Johnson (7.5 seconds on two head), tie-down ropers Jerome Schneeberger and Ryan Jarrett (16.2 seconds on two head), barrel racer Jill Moody (16.62 seconds) and bull rider Chris Roundy (88 points).
Sundell was not the only cowboy to post double wins over the weekend. Bareback rider Tilden Hooper took away championship buckles from Beaumont, Texas, and Nacogdoches, Texas, while saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss and bull rider Corey Navarre both had wins at Beaumont and Huntsville, Texas.

Rodeo News and Notes
Davis takes over lead in steer roping standings
With a win in the steer roping average at the Young County PRCA Rodeo in Graham, Texas, on March 27, Bryce Davis took over the lead in the world standings for the first time in his career.
Davis, the son of two-time World Champion Steer Roper Jim Davis, finished second in the first round at Graham and had a time of 35.5 seconds on three head to defeat runner-up Dan Fisher by 2.0 seconds.
Davis, of Abilene, Texas, earned $2,964 at Graham and another $651 for finishing in a tie for third in the second round at the Walker County Fair & Rodeo in Huntsville, Texas. That was enough to push him past Vin Fisher Jr. into first place in the world standings.
Cruise, Witherspoon reportedly set to star in rodeo film
The Los Angeles Times has reported that Tom Cruise has entered into negotiations with Sony Pictures to star in the film Paper Wings as a rodeo champion who falls in love with a talented young country singer, to be played by Reese Witherspoon.
No writer or director has been attached to the project yet, but the Times reports that Will Smith will produce the film through his Overbrook Entertainment company and would like to hire Gabriele Muccino, who directed Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds.
Western Wishes celebrates 15th anniversary with song, events
Western Wishes is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year with special events in Texas and California.
The outreach program utilizes Western heritage stars and grants wishes to children and adults facing adversity. A Western Wishes tribute song, “Here in This Place,” by Brian Lumley, will be premiered at the events. A video of the song also is planned, starring Western industry stars.
The first event will be held May 19 at the Steiner Ranch Steak House in Austin, Texas, with the second event set for May 22 at the Fess Parker Vineyards, in Santa Ynez, Calif. The late Parker was a friend of Western Wishes and had planned to attend, but passed away on March 18.
Scheduled guests in Austin are Larry Mahan, Tuff Hedeman, Clyde and Elsie Frost, Kelly Frost Macy, Tuf Cooper, Stran and Jennifer Smith, Bobby Steiner and Sid Steiner.
Steve Ford, President Gerald Ford’s son, will be the keynote speaker at the Santa Ynez event, and Luke Perry also is scheduled to attend.
“I couldn’t write a check big enough to the great hearts in the rodeo, roping, bull riding and horse world who have given of themselves to Western Wishes,” said Donnalyn Quintana, Western Wishes president/founder. “This is the only way to pay tribute to them all.”

ProRodeo Livestock video available for free
A 20-minute video, titled ProRodeo Livestock, is available free of charge to rodeo enthusiasts through the PRCA Industry Outreach Department in Colorado Springs, Colo. The educational video covers rodeo history, livestock care, PRCA stock contractors’ born-to-buck breeding program and PRCA rules that govern the safety of animals in competition.
PRCA stock contractors Dona Vold Larsen (Triple V Rodeo Company) and Jim Korkow (Korkow Rodeos) speak in the video, and several cowboys talk about the athletic ability of bucking horses and bulls and also discuss rodeo equipment.
Three-time and reigning World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote, 2006 World Champion Bull Rider B.J. Schumacher and 19-time Wrangler NFR saddle bronc qualifier Rod Hay are among the cowboys featured in the video.
Representatives of rodeo committees, rodeo clubs, Western youth groups and other organizations wishing to get a copy of the free video may call PRCA Industry Outreach Director Cindy Schonholtz at 719.593.8840 or e-mail requests to animalwelfare@prorodeo.com.
