LAS VEGAS -- Déjà vu was the theme of the night at Round 3 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Shawn Greenfield won the steer wrestling for the second consecutive night in front of 17,612 at the Thomas & Mack Center, and bareback riders Justin McDaniel and Jason Havens split first place for the second time in three rounds.
Greenfield, of Lakeview, Ore., stopped the clock in a rodeo-best 3.3 seconds to pocket another $17,139, cross the $100,000 mark for the season and move to fifth in the PRCA World Standings. Stockton Graves was second in 3.5 seconds.
"I feel great, confidence-wise," said Greenfield, who has won and event-best $34,279 in Las Vegas in three days. "The last two rounds, I’ve had two great steers. I’m getting great starts, the horse is working well, Jeff Green is hazing for me and he’s doing a heck of a job."
Greenfield stands fifth place in the Wrangler NFR average race, while Jake Rinehart leads the average with a three-head time of 11.6 seconds. He is keeping things in perspective after his back-to-back victories.
"I’m just trying to go in thinking every night is a new rodeo," Greenfield said. "I’m not going to get caught up in the drama. I’m just going to back in there, relax, do my job and see what happens."
They tied for the top spot in Round 1 with matching 86-point rides, and McDaniel and Havens shared first place in Round 3 with a pair of 85-pointers. McDaniel, the reigning world champion from Porum, Okla., rode Andrews Rodeo's Cool Water for the score, while Havens' score came aboard Carr Pro Rodeo's Big Lights.
"I haven’t seen that happen since I’ve been here where two guys split two rounds like that," McDaniel said. "It’s a pretty cool deal. (Cool Water) is probably the strongest and rankest horse I’ve been on all year long. At about six seconds, he kind of raised me up and hit me in the back of the head. He gave me a stinger and almost put me on the ground, but thank God I got back in position."
The bareback riding in Round 3 featured an "eliminator pen" of rank horses that tested the cowboys.
"It lived up to what it was called," Havens, of Prineville, Ore., said of the pen. "A lot of guys had their hands full tonight -- pretty much everybody, I thought. These horses that were out today; if a guy makes a mistake, they’re going to buck you off. So, a guy’s got to try and do everything he can, and it’s a little bit of a fight. You’ve just got to keep going at them and hope you’re there when the whistle blows."
McDaniel and Havens have each earned an event-best $30,685 so far and stand third and 11th, respectively, in the PRCA World Standings. Kaycee Feild continues to lead the average race with 255.5 points on three head.
Travis Tryan and Michael Jones won the third performance with a rodeo-best 3.8-second run in the team roping to pocket a pair of $17,139 checks and move into second place in the Wrangler NFR average. The win pushed the partners past the $100,000 in season earnings and put Tryan in fifth place in the PRCA World Standings and Jones in sixth place among heelers.
"It was kind of unconventional and a little wild," said Tryan, who is happy to have his four-time AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Walt back from a summer surgery. "I missed the barrier a little, and the steer stepped over to the right. That's not what I was hoping for, but I decided to throw anyway, and my loop went on pretty snappy. Michael heeled him as fast as it can be done, and we got a good face and flag because we were straight and out in the middle of the arena."
The duo finished two-tenths of a second ahead of Clay Tryan and Cory Petska to earn the win.
"To me, it was one of those runs that, when we came tight, I was looking up at the clock to see how fast we were going to be," Jones said. "It just felt fast, and I just didn't know how fast it was going to be, but I knew it was good. The steer cut me off, and I was kind of panicked when he got in front of me, but Travis headed him really fast and gave us a chance and it worked out well."
World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Cody Wright claimed the third-round victory with an 86.5-point mark on Sankey Rodeo Company's Surprise Party. Wright, of Milford, Utah, finished three points ahead of Heith DeMoss for the win, which moved him to 12th in the PRCA World Standings. He stands third in the Wrangler NFR average race with 245.5 points, three points behind average leader Justin Arnold.
"I feel like I’m starting to ride better," Wright said. "You get here and you ride some of the best horses in the world, and it helps build your confidence. Hopefully, it just keeps rolling on and I keep winning."
Arnold recorded his third consecutive top-four finish, and his event-best $30,962 pushed his season earnings past the $100,000 mark.
In the tie-down roping, Clint Robinson remained red-hot by recording his third straight run in less than eight seconds. The Spanish Fork, Utah, all-around hand won the round with a 7.3-second run, one-tenth of a second ahead of Round 1 winner Josh Peek.
"There's no sense in backing off," said Robinson, who has won an event-best $37,965 thus far in Las Vegas. "This is my third time here, and I'm kind of getting things figured out. Out here, if you hit the start, you've got a good horse and the calves want to cooperate, you can tie them in seven (seconds) pretty easily every time. I'm taking advantage of the calves I've had. There's $17,000 a night, so you've got to go for it."
Robinson leads the average standings and has closed the gap on 2007 World Champion Tie-Down Roper and PRCA World Standings leader Trevor Brazile to $7,641.
"I came here and was a little back from Trevor, but I knew there was so much money to win out here," Robinson said. "I'm just going to go at them every night and not do anything stupid, like break the barrier or miss. I'm going to try to tie them all down as fast as I can, and hopefully the average can take care of itself."
Bull rider Douglas Duncan earned the first 90-point score of the 2009 Wrangler NFR to win the third performance aboard Rafter H Rodeo's previously unridden bull Hot Wired. He finished 3.5 points ahead of Tate Stratton to earn his second Wrangler NFR round victory in as many years.
"I heard he hadn't been ridden, so I figured this would be a good place to try to do it," said Duncan, who crossed the $100,000 mark in season earnings with the victory. "He was such a good bull, and he threw a couple of really good guys off. I felt like I could have been bucked off at any time."
Duncan missed most of 2009 with knee and hip injuries that required two surgeries. He was leading the PRCA World Standings at the time of his injuries in May and entered the Wrangler NFR in sixth place.
"I'm such good friends with all these guys, and being stuck at home isn't worth a dang," said Duncan, the 2008 PRCA Bull Riding Rookie of the Year. "I missed all the camaraderie. It's a blast to be back."
Reigning World Champion Bull Rider J.W. Harris did not compete in Round 3 after suffering a spiral fracture in his right (riding) hand during the second round. He is on a two-day doctor release and will re-evaluate his situation after sitting out Round 4. He may try riding with his left hand, as his injured hand has been fitted with a splint until surgery can be performed following the season.
Bobby Welsh is the only bull rider who has covered his first three bulls and leads the average race with 226 points.
Two-time World Champion Barrel Racer Sherry Cervi won a battle of gold buckle holders in Round 3, topping a trio of fellow champions with a 13.80-second run. The Marana, Ariz., cowgirl finished .15 seconds ahead of 2007 World Champion Brittany Pozzi, while reigning World Champion Lindsay Sears was third and 2006 World Champion Mary Burger finished fourth.
"Stingray worked really well tonight, and I'm really proud of her," Cervi said. "I thought she'd do well here, but you just never know when you get here. I'm just glad to be back at the NFR on a horse my mom and dad raised. I've had the opportunity to compete against some great horses, but this is a very good group of horses."
Pozzi, the Round 1 winner, has won a rodeo-best $44,231 in three days and continues to lead the world standings with $200,096.
