DENVER, Colo. --- Thad Newell is looking for a win that could be the biggest of his career.
He took the lead in the over-all category on Thursday at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in the Denver Coliseum. Corey Navarre, from Weatherford, Okla., led after the third and fourth performances with a total score of 156 points. Then, Tag Elliot from Thatcher, Utah matched Navarre’s scores during the fifth and sixth performances.
After the sixteenth performance Thad Newell from Muskogee, Okla., moved to the top of the leader board. Newell was 84 points on the Cervi Championship Rodeo bull named Victoria’s Secret at the Wednesday night performance. He then came back for Thursday morning’s rodeo and scored 83 points on Flying 5 Rodeo’s Unreliable. He now leads the over-all category with 167 points on two head, 10 points ahead of the man in second place, Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, S.D. who has 157.
There are 132 bull riders entered in this year’s rodeo. So far, 11 have qualified rides on two bulls. The top 12 contestants qualify for Sunday’s final round and with five more performances before that, the competition looks tough.
There were four qualified rides during Thursday night’s rodeo and three were over 80 points. Wyoming’s Seth Glause was the leader of the pack at 83 points. Then, two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifier Clint Craig has 82. Mike Moore, from Kankakee, Ill., who used to live north of Denver in Wellington, Colo., scored 81. Moore has qualified for the WNFR 4 times and Glause has been there once.
All three of these men have the opportunity to be in Sunday’s finals but will need another eight-second ride and a good score. That would give them a jump start on the 2010 season and hopefully another trip to Las Vegas to compete in rodeo’s championship event.
Rodeo action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Friday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
