FORT WORTH, Texas --- The New Orleans Saints winning the Super Bowl was the second highlight of the day for two rodeo competitors from Louisiana.

Shane Hanchey from Sulphur and Lucas Guilbeau who is originally from Golden Meadow both won titles at the 114th Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. And, while they were both excited about their wins, they were also keeping track of their favorite football team during the final performance.

Hanchey won the tie-down roping title and $10,681. Guilbeau was the champion bull rider earning $9,173.

“It was a good day for Louisiana,” Hanchey said. “This is the biggest win I’ve ever had in my life. Having the Saint’s win the Superbowl was the icing on the cake. I probably won’t sleep tonight I’m so excited.”

Guilbeau has been coming to Fort Worth since he was a child. He grew up around horses and came here competing in the barrel race and calf roping. Winning the bull riding here was a dream come true.

“I’ve been dreaming of this my whole life,” he said. “Then the Saints win the Superbowl, this is one of the greatest days in Louisiana history.” Prior to competing in the Will Rogers Coliseum, Gilbeau was not ranked in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. The money he won here will move him way up and give him an opportunity to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).

“I made rodeo a goal this year and I want to be in Las Vegas next December,” he said. “My buddies and I have talked about it forever. We call it the yellow pen and that’s where I want to be.”

The barrel racers were well represented with Tana Poppino being the high money winner of the rodeo. It’s taken a while for Tana Poppino and her gray horse “Goose” to get together, but they did it here in a big way. They had three runs totaling 51.21 seconds. That netted her $13,768 making her the high money winner of the rodeo.

“It’s so awesome to win here,” she said. “This is one of the big major rodeos. It’s awesome that they opened the barrel race up and they are letting all of us come compete here. It made a difference in the prize money and gave us all an opportunity.”

Shaun Stroh took some time off after qualifying for his fourth WNFR. This is the first rodeo that he has competed at in 2010 and he made the effort worthwhile winning the saddle bronc riding title. Stroh had a total of 253 points and earned just over $13,000.

In 2009, Kaycee Feild came into the finals leading the average, but didn’t have a qualified ride and watched the championship buckle presentation from behind the chutes. For 2010 Feild once again came into the final round as the leader, but this year he made it stick.

It was sweet revenge for the second-generation cowboy and two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifier from Payson, Utah. Feild made himself a promise this year to stay mentally and physically focused and strong, so he would leave the Will Rogers Coliseum as the champion.

The last of the top twelve to ride, he came out spurring the Rafter G horse, Assault, for 85 points giving him a total of 334 on four horses and the title. Feild collected checks totaling $11,185, and he did it after a flying trip from the San Antonio Stock Show rodeo where he competed earlier on Sunday.

Cash Myers is already considered a veteran cowboy, even at the young age of 30. The seven time WNFR qualifier and all around cowboy can now add the 2010 FWSSR steer wrestling champion title to his collection. The Athens, Texas, man won the final round with a time of 3.6 seconds giving him 11.8 seconds on three steers and a total of $9,734 for his win. He gave the majority of the credit to his mount and the steer he drew.

“I came into the final round right in the middle, and I was blessed to draw a good steer and ride a good horse,” said Myers. “I was on the same horse that Shawn Greenfield rode at the 2009 NFR and he set me up for the win.”

Coming from a rodeo family, Myers grew up roping, riding, throwing steers, and doing all around cowboy work. Now he is ready to stay at home more and focus on his family along with his other projects such as the roping and steer wrestling camp he and his brother Rope Myers put on throughout the year.

“I’ve been so blessed throughout my life and rodeo career, now I’m able to enter the bigger rodeos and just let things go good for me,” said Myers. “I always said if I get in the truck it’s to make it to the NFR, this year when I get in the truck it’s just to go to a rodeo.”

Joel Bach earned the team roping title after leaving last year’s rodeo in as the reserve champion. Bach and Paul Eaves, both from Millsap, Texas, roped three steers in 16.1 seconds and left here with the championship header and heeler buckles along with checks totaling $4,351 each.

This year’s rodeo saw over 1,200 contestants competing for $550,671, up over $20,000 from 2009.
