Illness doesn't slow Branquinho at Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo

POCATELLO, Idaho – Luke Branquinho has never won the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, and he isn’t about to let a little thing like stomach flu keep him from filling in one of the few gaps in his career resume.

In his sixth trip to the DNCFR, Branquinho has been dominant all week, winning the first round of the steer wrestling and then posting a 3.7 second run Saturday afternoon at Holt Arena to tie Shawn Greenfield for the second round win.

It took the 2004 world champion into the Saturday night semifinals with the best two head average of 7.3 seconds and total earnings of $11,376, just $6 behind bareback rider Jessy Davis as the leading money winner in the preliminary rounds.

“In our sport, we have to go no matter what,” Branquinho said. “It’s not like we get paid for showing up. It’s just one of those things. We have to go whether we are ill, injured or whatever.

“I think I had either food poisoning or a little bit of stomach flu. My stomach was churning and I got really achy and sore.”

The top eight competitors in each event advanced to the Saturday night semifinals, with all previous times and scores erased. The field will then be cut in half, with the top four cowboys in the semifinals advancing to the finals for a chance at a national title, use of a Dodge truck for a year and cash.

“Every time you go to a rodeo you want to try to win first, whether it’s a rodeo with $1,000 added, Pocatello or the (Wrangler) National Finals,” Branquinho said. “You try to win first every time.”

For a cowboy like 2006 World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Chad Ferley, who has been struggling of late, putting together a big week at the DNCFR gives him a big boost.

Ferley, just 29th in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings, tied for second in the first round here and then won the second round on Saturday with an 83-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Devil Lady to claim the two head average with 165 points.

Ferley, of the Badlands Circuit, is a four-time DNCFR qualifier and while he has won money at Holt Arena, he never qualified for the elite eight before.

“We'll just have to wait and see what happens in the semis,” Ferley said. “If it all comes together, it would be nice to take a (Dodge) pickup home.

“I need to catch that momentum. It’s been kind of a rough winter on me. Finally, I’m getting on some good horses and things are going better.”

Saturday’s most dramatic comeback-from-the-verge-of-elimination was provided by Prairie Circuit bull rider Poncho Limas.

Limas’ first bull, Bar T Rodeo’s Iron Will, didn’t have a good day and Limas was given a score of 66 points with the option of a re-ride. Big Bend Rodeo Company’s Heart Eight did not disappoint. The large white bull with horns spun away from Limas’ riding hand for the eight seconds and provided an 89-point ride.

It not only was good enough to give Limas the win in round 2, but also got him into evening seminal program. He had the highest score among those competitors who only completed one ride.

“I really like them away from my hand now,” Limas said. “I was having a little trouble (with bulls that spin) away from my hand and then I went back to Oklahoma and worked with (3-time DNCFR and 1992 World Champion Bull Rider) Cody Custer in the practice pen. He was helping me and giving me pointers.”

Emergency room nurse Nancy Hunter, also from the Prairie Circuit, had the day’s fastest run in the barrel racing with a time of 14.94 seconds. It fell short of Rachael Myllymaki’s day-old DNCFR record by .03, but was good enough to give her the two-run average title (29.94).

Brad Goodrich, of the Columbia River Circuit, had a 7.8 second run in the tie-down roping Saturday to tie teammate Shane Erickson for the second round win and assure that both of them would advance to the semifinals. Local favorite Matt Shiozawa held on for the average win with a time of 17.6 seconds on two head.
