CALDWELL, Idaho --- The forecast wasn’t the only thing that was hot in Caldwell, Idaho, on Wednesday night.
With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, it might be assumed that rodeo animals and contestants might not perform at their peak, or that rodeo fans wouldn’t face the sun in the stands. Those assumptions would be wrong as a near capacity crowd saw several lead changes and lots of exciting action at the second performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo.
Bobby Mote, a two-time world champion bareback rider from Culver, Ore., took the lead in his standard event. Mote rode Powder River Rodeo’s horse named Show Boat for 87 points. He is currently second in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings and is looking to give Clint Cannon a run for the world title.
Cannon from Waller, Texas, will be competing here on Thursday night. He recently set a new earnings record for a single event and will be hoping to add to it here. Cannon played football in college and considered going to college at Boise State but decided it was too far from home. Now, his rodeo career takes him many miles away from home. Cannon will ride the Burch Rodeo horse named Powdered Whisky here and will be hoping for a big score to get him to the pay window and qualify for Saturday night’s finals.
Mote will definitely be among the contenders for a Caldwell Night Rodeo title and he couldn’t be any happier about that. He is $30,000 behind Cannon and is hoping to close the gap between now and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).
“This is a great rodeo,” Mote said. “You have all the top cowboys in the PRCA and a lot of great stock, and one of the best crowds in the country. It’s always exciting to come here and get a chance to move up in the world standings.”
Another cowboy that is hoping to improve his position in the world standings thanks to the Caldwell Night Rodeo is Dusty Hausauer from Dickinson, N.D. Hausauer is currently 11th in the world saddle bronc standings. He moved to the top of the leader board here with an 88 point effort on Burch Rodeo’s horse named Jim Dandy. Any money that he wins will help him in his bid for a second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification.
Shawn Greenfield from Lakeview, Ore., took the over-all lead in steer wrestling and is tied for first place in the second round. He had a time of 3.7 seconds on Wednesday night to tie with Trevor Knowles from Mount Vernon, Ore. Greenfield also had success in the first round and leads the over-all standings with a total time of 8.1 seconds. He is now arranging his rodeo schedule to be back here on Saturday night.
Just a week ago, Savanah Reeves from Dublin, Texas, lost her great barrel racing horse Moon. She is 21st in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association standings and was hoping to qualify for rodeo’s championship event, the NFR , in December. Reigning world champion barrel racer Lindsay Sears came to the rescue and offered Reeves the use of her horse Moe.
Reeves placed in the first round, came back and had a 17.48 second run on Wednesday and is currently third over-all. She stands to add to her earnings with another good clean run here on Saturday night.
The third performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo will begin on Thursday at 8 p.m.
